Tottenham Hotspur under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho eliminated Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side from the EFL Cup. A tough contest between these London rivals ended 5-4 as Spurs won on penalties.

Normal time was not enough to separate the teams. After 90 minutes, the score was 1-1. New signing Timo Werner clicked into gear and whipped up the magic to score his first goal for the club and give Chelsea the lead 19 minutes into the game.

Eric Lamela’s equalizer just seven minutes before the end of the game forced a penalty shootout. For the Spurs side, it was a bittersweet tale for debutant Sergio Regulion who was culpable for Chelsea’s first goal, however, he atoned for his error by providing the assist for his team’s leveler.

Frank Lampard handed Edouard Mendy his first start following the goalkeeper’s move from Rennes. The Senegalese international was focused between the goal posts as he made crucial saves. Although, he wasn’t able to deny any Spurs player from scoring in the penalty shootout.

Nine penalties were converted by players from both sides before Mason Mount’s miscued shot sent Tottenham through to the Quarter-Finals of the competition.
