How Obasanjo’s Plan For Anti-Akeredolu Alliance Collapsed

President Olusegun Obasanjo made an attempt to intervene in the Ondo governorship election by getting Agboola Ajayi to step down in favour of Eyitayo Jegede, the national chairman of the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu confirmed on Wednesday.

Nwanyanwu in an interview said that the Obasanjo intervention derailed after the former president got facts from the ZLP that Ajayi was better positioned to win the election than Jegede.

Nwanyanwu’s assertion followed controversies over the recent meeting between Dr. Obasanjo and Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, the national leader of the ZLP.

Supporters of Jegede, the PDP candidate have claimed that the emergence of a third force in the person of Ajayi who is backed by Mimiko could split the votes against the incumbent, Rotimi Akeredolu.

Speaking on AIT’s Kakaaki programme on Wednesday morning, Nwanyanwu said:

“There has been an attempt to make an alliance and I can confirm that but President Obasanjo was shocked that what he was told was not correct,” Nwanyanwu said.

“President Obasanjo met Mimiko and it did not reach any agreement. In any case it is too short, we are already on the ballot. We are going to win that election on Saturday if it is free and fair. They trust the leadership of the party,” Nwanyanwu said.

Nwanyanwu insisted that Obasanjo saw that the ZLP was best positioned to win and as such broke up the negotiations.

The ZLP chairman said that ZLP was going into the election upon what he claimed as the goodwill enjoyed by Mimiko as a two term governor of the state.

He further rubbished claims of an alliance which he said was being sold by other parties to weaken the chances of the ZLP.

“The truth of the matter is that we are not in alliance with anyone in this. They have been parading this and it is not correct. We are not in any agreement,” the ZLP chairman said.
