Nigerians have reacted with elation to the disbandment of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Sunday, following the nationwide protests against the brutality of the unit.

The #EndSars protest took the centre stage, since last Saturday, following the circulation of a video where SARS operatives allegedly harassed a young man in in Ughelli, Delta State.

Since then the protests have cascaded unto several parts of the country.

The online campaign was not left behind as the hashtag #EndSars topped the Twitter worldwide trending list in the past three days.

Celebrities, sports men and women and politicians lent their voices on the #EndSars campaign, even Nigerian musicians led protests in many parts of the country, especially in Lagos.

Bowing to the pressure on Sunday, IGP announced the disbandment of SARS, noting that officers in the squad should be redeployed to other police commands, formations and units.

Many Nigerians have reacted to the news with excitement that their voices are being heard.

Some Nigerians nevertheless expressed scepticism on the development, arguing that it might be a shadow ban to pacify Nigerians who are protesting.

Some asked FG to fully reform the entire police force and prosecute errant police officers to face the wrath of the law.

Let Buhari sign an executive order to this effect. Scrapping without an executive order to this effect has no force of law #EndSARS
