Rivers Defies Wike As Youths Protest Against SARS
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
Despite Governor Nyesom Wike’s ban on protest in Rivers State, the #EndSARS protest has commenced in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The state government on Monday evening, placed a ban on the #EndSARS protest scheduled for Tuesday morning, a development that sparked outrage.
The state commissioner for information, Paulinus Nsirim in a statement, said, “The Rivers State Government hereby wish to inform the general public that all forms of protests have been banned throughout the State. Therefore, all proposed protests under #EndSars Campaign are hereby prohibited.
“Government took this decision because the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had already scrapped the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
“Therefore, there is no need for any form of protest against a Unit of the Police Force that no longer exists.”
Despite Wike’s controversial ban, many youths defiled the ban in the state, by embarking on the scheduled protest.
There were also strong reactions to the government’s action on twitter with many Nigerians flaying the ban and reminding the governor of his own demonstration against police brutality in 2016.
