OBJ, IBB, GEJ, Other Former Leaders Back Buhari

As Buhari Claims Protest Was Hijacked

Published

on

The initial genuine and well-intended protest of youths in parts of the country against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) was hijacked and misdirected, President Muhammadu Buhari told former Heads of State and Presidents of Nigeria, Friday in Abuja.

In a virtual meeting with the former leaders, President Buhari reiterated that the Government will not fold its arms and allow miscreants and criminals continue to perpetrate acts of hooliganism in the country.

At the meeting were all living past leaders, including: Gen. Yakubu Gowon, President Olusegun Obasanjo, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Chief Ernest Shonekan, Gen. Abulsalami Abubakar, and former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The President recounted the initial concessions made by his administration on the demands of youths protesting against the excesses of some members of the SARS.

He recalled that the youths had demanded that the squad be disbanded, and further articulated the additional demands, including:

”The immediate release of all arrested protesters.

”Justice for deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate compensation for their families.

”Setting up an independent body to oversee the investigation and prosecution of all reports of Police misconduct within 10 days.

”Psychological evaluation and re-training of all disbanded SARS officers before they can be re-deployed; and increase in Police salary.”

The President declared: ”We accepted all the demands and proceeded immediately to scrap SARS and started the process of addressing the other demands.

”Unfortunately, the protesters refused to call off the protest and engage the Government to address their grievances. Instead, they became emboldened and gradually turned violent.”

President Buhari expressed concern that in the mayhem that ensued, many lives have been lost, a number of public and private properties completely destroyed or vandalized.

Reiterating his pledge to Nigerians from the nationwide broadcast Thursday, the President reaffirmed:

”We will continue to improve good governance through our democratic process including through sustained engagement.

”We shall also continue to ensure that liberty and freedom, as well as the fundamental rights of all citizens are protected. Here, I want to also reaffirm our commitment to preserving the unity of this country.”

The President thanked the former Heads of State for attending the meeting and their invaluable comments, observations and advice, adding that ”Nigerians expect nothing less from responsible statesmen.”

Each of the former leaders commended President Buhari for steps taken so far to restore calm and order to the country and also applauded the presidential broadcast of Thursday as detailed and soothing to the country.

”I commend the speech of last night. The nation had been waiting. You made points that I believe need to be commended. Peaceful demonstration is part of democratic practice. The demands of the genuine protesters were accepted, and you are working on implementation. We commend you,” former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, said.

The former heads of state were unanimous in their view that generation of employment and growing the economy including through direct foreign investments were critical to checking youth restiveness.

They also expressed their condolences to the bereaved families of civilians, policemen and soldiers killed as a result of the violent protest, and reaffirmed the commitment to respect the fundamental rights of citizens, including for peaceful protest as enshrined in the Constitution.

The former Heads of State also condemned the divisive and inciting pronouncements of separatists, and were of the opinion that such acts should be stopped.

Equally, the former Leaders commended the actions taken by Governors to address the demands of the ENDSARS protesters and their efforts to check the excesses of those who perpetrated violent acts and conduct.

Finally, they called on youths to pursue peaceful means, in seeking redress through engagement with Government and encouraged further conversation with the youths and other stakeholders in the country.

Buhari’s Camp Hails As Dreaded Bandits’ Leader Dies

Published

on

By

A notorious bandits’ leader in the North West region of the country, Dogo Gide, has been reportedly killed drawing cheers from the camp of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad made this known in a post via his official X handle on Wednesday morning.

Ahmad said Gide died from gunshot wounds sustained during a confrontation with Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) troops of the Nigerian Army.

He wrote: “Woke up to the good news that Dogo Gide, has finally kicked the bucket. The notorious bandits leader died from gunshot wounds sustained during a confrontation with Operation Hadarin Daji (OPHD) forces.”

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/27/top-islamic-cleric-killed-in-zamfara/

Gide, one of Nigeria’s most wanted bandits, is responsible for the kidnapping and deaths of thousands of innocent villagers and the displacement of even more in the North.

It was learned that his operational headquarters rotate among states in the North West, especially Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Katsina.

Recall that on October 30, 2023, Gide escaped death and capture following a fierce battle with Nigerian troops when they stormed his strongholds in Zamfara State in a surprise operation.

He managed to bolt after a military operation targeted his enclaves at Dansadau, Mai Tukunya and Babban Doka villages in Zamfara state.

A military source had told The Daily Times, which was embedded in the operation, that the kingpin sustained serious gunshot injuries.

He was hit in various parts of his body. Bleeding profusely, he escaped by the skin of his teeth,” the source said.

Apparently, he was not expecting the Nigerian Army in his fortress. But we are the formidable Nigerian Army, and we can go anywhere we want. It was a tough battle. He and his extremely violent foot soldiers put up stiff resistance, but in the end, we are the Nigerian Army –and we overcame them.

”He was bleeding with gunshot wounds in several parts of his body. He narrowly escaped into the bushes and forests, but I doubt he will survive the wounds, except by some trick of fate.”

Sources further said that the troops breached Gide’s Yau Sarkin Pawa residence, searched the house and destroyed it.

The feat was achieved on 30th October, 2023, when the Special Forces troops of OPHD conducted a fighting patrol following credible information received on terrorist activities at Sangeko forest in Kebbi state where the troops promptly responded and engaged the terrorists in an intense firefight,” the sources added.

Items recovered included a tailoring factory for sewing various military and other security agencies’ uniforms, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), a mini pharmacy suspected to be used for the treatment of wounded terrorists and five operational motorcycles and sewing machines, among others.

These were set ablaze instantly by the Special Forces personnel.

Electronic Transmission Of Election Results Not Mandatory – APC

Published

on

By

Edo Uzodimma

The Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says there is no law making it mandatory for INEC to transmit election results electronically.

Mr Dele Alake, Special Adviser on Media and Communications at the PCC made the declaration in Abuja on Friday when he spoke at a news conference.

Alake said the transmission of election results was at the discretion of INEC.

According to him, the Electoral Act 2022 does not contain any mandatory provision regarding the transmission of results.

“The complaint over electronic transmission of election results is not supported by law.

“Section 38 of the Electoral Act 2022 relied upon by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) to challenge the result of the Feb. 25 presidential election has nothing to do with transmission of election results.

“Section 60, sub-section 2 of the Act deals with transmission of results and it is at the discretion of INEC. The Act does not contain any mandatory provision regarding the transmission of results.

“In any case, the process of transmitting results from polling units, whether real-time, two days later or at any time, cannot in anyway change the results that have been announced,’’ Alake stressed.

He added that what was important was the counting of votes in the presence of party agents and to the hearing of voters.

Alake said it was absurd to insinuate that time variation in uploading results would cause a change in the figures.

“In any case, the process of transmitting results from polling units, whether real time, two days later or at any time, cannot in anyway change the results that have been announced,’’ he said.

He added that the news conference was to respond to both the candidates of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and that of LP, Mr Peter Obi, following their recent statements as regards the election results.

He described the efforts by the PDP, the LP and the NNPP to approach the court over the election results as a welcome development.

“We must thank them for finally opting for the rule of law as against the initial belligerent posture as they continue their baseless journey of chasing after a mirage.

“Those that lay claim to democratic credentials are expected to be conscious of those inimitable minimum requirements of law and order, even in the face of perceived injustice.

“The initial knee-jerk and hothead call for anarchy by their proxies was ill-advised and would in no way serve any noble cause. It is good to know that reason has prevailed.

“We welcome the decision by the PDP, the LP and also the NNPP candidates to test their claims as ridiculous as they are in the court of law as provided for by the Constitution,’’ Alake said.

He said listening to Atiku and Obi at their different news conferences, left the APC family confounded.

“As we all can see, these two otherwise experienced politicians are pinpointing lack of adherence to the guidelines as basis for discrediting the votes lawfully cast by Nigerians.

“We shall examine the so-called process that was purportedly breached by the electoral body and how it, in their wild imagination, undermined the credibility of the election.

“The claim that INEC did not use the BVAS is false; those who voted across Nigeria, including Atiku and Obi, were accredited by BVAS,’’ Alake said.

He added that except for bad losers, stakeholders should rather be celebrating the tremendous improvement the use of BVAS had brought to the electoral process instead of discrediting the election.

He said that 2023 presidential election was a watershed as it produced unprecedented outcomes and defied conventions.

According to him, the deployment and use of BVAS is the only reason the elections produced strange outcomes and upsets in many cases.

“The loss of Katsina and Lagos states to the PDP and the LP respectively, were contrary to expectations.

“BVAS brought the intended credibility to voters’ accreditation such that many governors and well-established politicians lost elections in what should be safe bet areas.

“The era of ghost-voting and stuffing of ballot boxes is gone. As the experience in the last governorship election in Osun has shown.

“Over-voting would automatically lead to outright cancellation of the results of the polling units based on the provision of the new Electoral Act,’’ he stressed.

Alake said the same PDP trying to pull the wool across the face of Nigerians was the culprit in the Osun governorship election.

He added that contrary to the false claims of Atiku and Obi, the reasons for losing the elections were foretold.

“Besides the delusional expectations created during the campaigns to hoodwink the public, most PDP leaders knew their party had been decimated by Obi.

“The Southeast and South-South that were traditional strongholds of the PDP constituted the core support base for the LP.

“The PDP went into the election without its limbs and lied to itself that it could win the race.

“It is worthy of note that Atiku also accepted this fact during his press conference, when he lamented that his party’s votes in the Southeast and South-South were carted away by the LP,’’ Alake noted. (NAN)

#EndSARS: ‘You’re a kindergarten oppressor’, Magashi Slams Datti Over Comment

Published

on

Magashi-Datti

Haruna Magashi, vice presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has slammed his Labour Party counterpart, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, over his recent comment on the #EndSARS protests.

Earlier this week, Baba-Ahmed stated on a Channels Television program that the use of the term “massacre” to describe the unlawful killing of peaceful protesters by Nigerian security forces is debatable.

According to Peter Obi’s running mate, the word massacre has technical meanings that may or may not apply to the situation in context.

Magashi responded to Baba-Ahmed’s remark by saying, “I understand why Datti is speaking from a watery and cunning mouth on this issue.” He is a kindergarten oppressor who delights in portraying himself as the enemy of the people.”

“Datti is so conservative and anti-people that he has never once condemned or fought against the thousands of human rights violations in the North.”

According to Magashi’s office, Baba-comment Ahmed’s sought to defend the indefensible and was a “insult on the quest for the total liberation of all Nigerians from the wicked hand of fascists and systematic tyranny.”

“Datti is clearly defending barbarism with this statement. His other defences are insults on the most profound Judicial Panel Report in history that critically and correctly judged the incidents at Lekki as a “massacre!”,” he said.

He added, “By legal and moral standards, what happened in Lekki is not just an abuse of human rights; it is a grave assault on humanity. It is a pogrom that has put thousands of people in trauma, perpetual fear, and depression. I align with all the great ENDSARS youths and the Judicial Panel that what was planned and executed for hours on the night of October 20th, 2020, two years ago, was a genocide. A wicked and bloody pogrom. A massacre we will never forget.”
