Harsh criticisms have trailed the decision of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to fine Channels Television, Arise Television and Africa Independent Television for “unprofessional coverage” of the #EndSARS protests.

The acting Director-General of the NBC, Prof. Armstrong Idachaba, on Monday, announced the sanction at a press conference in Abuja.

Recall that last week, GWG reported how the NBC warned broadcast stations in the country not to “embarrass” the government and private individuals in their reportage.

Many Nigerians have taken to the microblogging platform, Twitter, to criticize the decision of NBC, arguing that it is antithetical to democratic tenets.

Reacting, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, (SERAP) condemned the illegal fines of N9 million imposed on the three broadcast stations.

SERAP also threatened to sue NBC, if the decision is not rescind within 48 hours.

“BREAKING: We condemn the illegal fines of N9m reportedly imposed by the National Broadcasting Commission on Channels TV,  AIT and Arise TV [N3m each] over their coverage of the #EndSARS protests. We’ll sue the NBC if the unconstitutional fines are not rescinded within 48 hours,” SERAP tweeted.
