Mixed reactions have trailed the nomination of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu for  a second term.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the President  on Media and Publicity , Femi Adesina said President Muhammadu Buhari  presented a letter to the Senate for his confirmation.

“In a letter to President of the Senate, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, the President said in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), “I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second and final term,” the statement said.

The nomination of Yakubu for the second time has stirred mixed reactions.

The mixed reactions were on top of diverse perspectives on his first tenure with the arrival of inconclusive elections and disorder that reigned during elections notably in Kogi and Osun governorship elections.

Buhari is also the first president in the country’s history to appoint his kin as chairman of the nation’s electoral body.

Some critics argued that his nomination for the second time will enable him to implement more electoral reforms.

Some viewed it as a way to cement the loyalty of the INEC boss to the president and the ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC).
