Arsenal astonished Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford for the first time in 14 years, courtesy of a goal from the spot kick by Pierre Emerick Aubameyang who hadn’t scored in five games for the first time since 2014.

It was a game of high intensity as Arsenal had lost to Leicester City last time and Manchester United were seeking for their first home win in the Premier League this season.

For most periods of the game, Arsenal were the better side. Missed chances from Bukayo Saka and eventual goal scorer Pierre Emerick Aubameyang told the whole story.

Harry Maguire also missed a good chance to break the deadlock from a header. Mason Greenwood also had a shot on goal after he was picked out by Marcus Rashford with an exquisite pass.

Willian’s curling shot hit the woodwork as he combined well with Aubameyang.

That was all the first half had to offer in terms of goalscoring chances while Arsenal were the more dominant side.

Mikel Arteta’s side played with conviction as they tamed Manchester United’s attack. Thomas Partey gave the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes something to think about by tracking them down in conjunction with making vital interceptions.

Second half action was more exhilarating than the first. At long last, the goal finally game 69 minutes into the game after Paul Pogba was adjudged to have bundled over Hector Bellerin in the box.

Aubameyang stepped up to take the penalty and dispatched it as he sent David De Gea the wrong way.

Attacking substitutions made by Ole Gunnar Solksjaer didn’t salvage the situation for the Red Devils. He brought on Donny Van De Beek, Edinson Cavani and Nemanja Matic. Van De Beek came close to bring his side level but his low cross which was blocked by Mohammed El Neny hit the crossbar.

On an evening when the heavens opened up, the Gunners held on for an elusive victory over their old rivals. This propitious result has catapulted Arsenal to 8th place on the table. Manchester United’s capitulation leaves them lingering in a precarious 15th position on the log.
