Ganduje Taunted For Receiving VAT From Beer

Published

Harsh criticisms have followed the destruction of 1,975,000 bottles of beer in 20 trucks by the Kano State Government. The destroyed consignment of beer was worth N200 million according to the Kano State Hisbah Board which oversaw the destruction.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje speaking through his deputy, Nasiru Gawuna during the exercise said the consumption of alcohol and other  intoxicants are forbidden in Islam.

With photographs of the destruction exercise surfacing on the social media, the development has sparked reactions from many Nigerians.

Some Twitter users expressed dissatisfaction over the action, stressing that Kano state will benefit from the value-added-tax collected from alcoholic products in other parts of the country.

@savndaniel tweeted: “HYPOCRISY RECEIVING PROCEEDS VAT/ALLOCATION FROM THE SALE OF ALCOHOL BY THE KANO STATE GOVERNMENT. The Kano State Government in a dramatic show of shame and hypocrisy has destroyed liquid contents of alcohol (bear) worth 200 million naira, in a secular Nigeria.”

@Baldilocks__ tweeted: “The highest form of hypocrisy is Kano State benefiting from the proceeds of a commodity they consider Haram.”

@OgbeniDipo tweeted: “What a shame and a mess. But Kano State shares from the money generated from taxes and VAT on alcohol from Lagos, Enugu, Rivers, Delta and other states were alcohol is sold. Until Nigeria is restructured, we are just wasting our time.”
