Five Takeaways From Villa’s Disgrace Of Arsenal
By Ekene Dike
Aston Villa left Mike Arteta with plenty to ponder after emerging as 3-0 winners against the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday night. A second defeat at home this season, exposed the weaknesses of a reinvigorating Arsenal side.
These are five takeaways from the ignominious defeat to a Jack Grealish led Aston Villa side
- Arsenal Lacks Creativity In Midfield: A team which is devoid of creativity in the middle of the park is bound to falter. That was Arsenal’s case in the match against Aston Villa. Thomas Partey and Mohammed El Neny who specialize in doing the “dirty work” weren’t able to craft chances for the starved Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. Arsenal’s talismanic Aubameyang failed to play a shot in the game.
- Alexandre Lacazette Has Become A Shadow Of His Former Self: Football is about taking your chances. One goal can influence the final scoreline. Lacazette was guilty of poor finishing in the game. Earlier in the season, he missed two chances against Liverpool at Anfield. His goalscoring abilities have declined in recent times and he has to step up.
- Players Got Carried Away By The Wonderful Victory Against Manchester United In The Last Game: Everyone applauded Arsenal for ending the 14 years drought at Old Trafford before hosting Aston Villa. Complacency infiltrated the players against dark horses Aston Villa. Unknown to Arsenal, Aston Villa came to the Emirates to get three solid points.
- The Defense Was In Sixes And Sevens: Hitherto, Arsenal had the best defense in the league, only to be undone by Aston Villa who had castrated defending champions 7-2 some weeks ago. The Aston Villa side has the ability to terrorize any defensive unit. And, they did that in tantalizing fashion.
- Mikel Arteta Will Have To Stop Playing Aubameyang As A Winger: Arsenal’s number 14 from Gabon is a player who scores goals for fun. He has managed to find the back of the net just twice in eight appearances this season. It is devastating for a player of his calibre. His shyness in front of goal is caused by the coach’s decision to play him on the flanks. There is an urgent need for him to start playing as a central attacker if Arsenal want to make it to the UEFA Champions League next season.
