The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has opened up on why it imposed fines on three broadcast stations in the aftermath of the just ended #EndSARS demonstrations.

GWG writes that NBC recently fined three major television stations in the country, Arise TV, Channels TV and AIT for use of “unverifiable footages”.

According to the broadcast regulatory body, the broadcast stations will pay a fine between N2million and N3million.

Speaking on why the broadcast stations were fined on Wednesday the Acting Director-General of the broadcast regulatory agency, Armstrong Idachaba, while speaking with Arise News stated that the stations were fined due to their recklessness in the coverage of the #EndSARS protests.

“We had to impose a sanction because we found out that in the coverage of the #EndSARS campaign that many broadcasters began to be reckless in the coverage of the crisis.”

Although, he commended some media outlets for their professionalism in their reportage of the protest but he regretted the dramatic turn around in their reportage  when the protests became violent.

He said: “Rather than come up with facts of the issues, we began to see deliberate distortions, manipulated storylines, fake infusions and intrusions into the narrative, graphic presentations that rather than help to reduce the situation more or less aggravated.

“We saw spurious claims, misrepresentation of facts and these are in clear violation of the provision of the broadcasting code. We began to wonder at that time whether broadcasters have totally abdicated their ethical requirements.”
