Chris Ngige has opened up on why Southeast leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC were absent at last Thursday’s defection of Dave Umahi to the party.

The minister of labour, productivity and employment said that the leaders were not present because they were not invited.

“We didn’t attend because we were not invited, the answer is simple and short,” Vanguard quoted the minister as saying.

The absence of the Southeast APC leaders had stirred claims of disharmony among the leaders over the defection which many have interpreted as an opportunistic move by the governor to grab either the presidential or vice-presidential ticket of the party in 2023.

Many of the Southeast APC leaders are also aspiring towards the same goals.

Asked why they were not invited, Dr. Ngige added:

“It is a party thing, either the governor who is coming into our party will invite us or the Caretaker Committee leadership will invite us, neither of them invited us.”

Rebuffing claims of a crack, he said:

“Is there any crack in a family that somebody maybe is eating food and didn’t invite you to dinner, it is a rally, it has nothing to do with the welcome reception by the Caretaker.

“Maybe they felt most of us were busy. I am busy with ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) problem as you know and labour issues, maybe that was why they didn’t invite me. Even if they invited me, exigencies of duties wouldn’t have allowed me to go. So, there is no crack.”

The minister also rebuffed the question as to whether Umahi consulted him before the defection saying:

“That is the question you should ask the governor not me.”
