Female lawmakers in the National Assembly on Wednesday lamented the suppression of the female gender by their male colleagues and they have thus urged President Muhammadu Buhari to come to their aid.

The female lawmakers comprising seven senators and 11 members of the House of Representatives have specifically called on President Buhari to forward a bill that would secure 35% of the seats for women.

The action they claimed was necessary to ensure that issues concerning women are no longer despised by the men dominated chambers of the National Assembly.

The legislators spoke at a workshop for National and States Assemblies female legislators on Gender legislation and other legal instruments. The workshop was organized by the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in conjunction with and United Nations Women.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, APC, Lagos Central while expressing her frustration with her male colleagues said that the situation would continue except the president intervened to stem the discrimination.

“We have been talking and this is not working. The president needs to send an Executive Bill to the National Assembly. That is the only way we can make progress. Women will not freely give us our right place.’

She was backed by the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, who represented Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila at the occasion said that women must not be displaced from the political arena.

“There are still too many obstacles restricting women in Nigeria. This is more prevalent and damaging in politics and governance. We keep women from participating in governance. The society suffers because of this. It often feels as if our best days are behind us. I wholeheartedly support women’s participation in politics. I support and endorse moves to help women in government.’

Several other women present at the occasion lent their voices in the same direction.
