UEFA: How Man U Walked Through Baskasehir
By Ekene Dike
Manchester United outclassed Istanbul Baskasehir 4-1 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night to remain leaders of Group H in the Champions League. The Red Devils are now within touching distance of the Round of 16.
Portuguese sensation Bruno Fernandes pulled off a masterclass by scoring a delightful brace in the first half. Marcus Rashford converted from the penalty spot and Daniel James came off the bench to find the back of the net. Istanbul, however, got a consolation goal courtesy of a Deniz Turuc free kick.
A cracker from Bruno Fernandes when the clock ticked at seven minutes gave Manchester United the perfect start. He got another goal in the nineteenth minute through a fumble by the Istanbul goalkeeper, who failed to handle a cross and dropped the ball in the path of Fernandes for a tap in.
Five minutes after the half-hour mark, Marcus Rashford was thankful to Bruno Fernandes who allowed him take the spot kick to make it 3-0. At halftime, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s men were in charge of the game.
Basaksehir were more combative in the second half and they were almost rewarded for their attempts with Visca bringing out the best in David De Gea.
Finally, they prevented De Gea from keeping a clean sheet via Deniz Turuc’s 75th minute goal from a free kick. There wasn’t much De Gea could do to stop a set piece taken with a terrific technique. Deniz Turuc is now the first player to score a direct free kick versus Man Utd in the Champions League since Franck Ribéry for Bayern Munich in March 2010.
A moment to remember for Welshman Daniel James came in injury time when he scored to become the first Welshman to score a Champions League goal for United since Ryan Giggs against Benfica in September 2011.
