Amaechi Putting Politics Above Rivers Growth – Wike
By GWG Staff
Nyesom Wike has again taken the battle to his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi saying that the minister of transportation has not once consulted him on how they could jointly develop the state.
Wike served under Amaechi as chief of staff before he was appointed minister of state for education during which time both men entered into a discord that led to Wike taking over the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP structure and eventually mounting a successful but hostile takeover of the state government in the 2015 election.
Since then both men have been in perpetual political conflict and Amaechi was conspicuous in his absence at last Tuesday’s gathering of South-South leaders with a presidential delegation hosted by Wike. The meeting was graced by nearly all major federal political office holders.
Opening up on the gulf between him and his immediate predecessor, Wike while responding to claims by Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege that governors do not consult with federal lawmakers on the issues of the region said:
“The problem is that we play politics in everything,” as he said that federal representatives should liaise with the governors towards developing their states.
“Unfortunately, you have the South-South zone, where you have PDP governors, (but) It is unfortunate. Now, as I speak to you, I have a Minister . . . he has never one day said ‘what do we do for the state, look what I’m thinking’.
“So that opportunity has not been there. We are playing politics, saying these Governors are not members of my party, and so I don’t need to talk to them. And that’s the problem we have always had.
“And we have said, that is not correct, politics have come and gone, we are talking about governance, what affects the people of Niger-Delta. When the time for politics comes, then everybody will go your own way.”
