Tight Security As Court Reserves Judgment On Musician’s Appeal Against Death Sentence
There was tight security around the premises of the Kano High Court complex on Thursday, as the Kano Court of Appeal reserved judgment on the appeal filed by Yahaya Aminu Sharif against the death sentence passed on him by a lower court.
Sheriff was sentenced to death for supposedly committing blasphemy against the prescriptions of the Sharia law as applicable in Kano State.
The court’s decision to reserve judgment followed supplication by the appellant’s counsel, Barrister Kola Alapinni to set aside the death sentence as passed by an Upper Shariah Court on the basis of lack of fair hearing.
He submitted that the procedures as adopted by the court were against the provisions of the Constitution of the country.
His submission was, however, opposed by the state counsel, Barrister Aisha Mahud who prayed the court to affirm the sentences as passed by the lower court.
Upon the submissions, the presiding judge, Justice Nasiru Saminu said he would communicate a date to deliver judgment to both parties in the case.
