Jose Mourinho prevented an ambitious Frank Lampard from registering three consecutive league wins against his prominent personality as Chelsea and Tottenham tussle for premiership supremacy ended with a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.

It was a match that GWG had labelled as “ Teacher vs Pupil showdown.”

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea outfit were the first to knock on the door from a Hakim Ziyech straight shot to Hugo Lloris within one minute of the referee’s kick off whistle.

Spurs who were seeking for their first win at Stamford Bridge since 1990, came close to finding the opener when Bergwijn’s curled effort went over the bar after a fine move of the ball by Jose Mourinho’s men.

Chelsea continued to ask questions of Tottenham defense and they thought a breakthrough had been found in the 10th minute by Timo Werner whose terrific finish into the far corner, resulting from Mason Mount’s pass was ruled to be offside by the linesman.

Four minutes later, Serge Aurier was the next player to have his effort on target, regrettably Edouard Mendy in goal produced an inspirational save to thwart the ball from going in for the first goal. It was a fascinating encounter between a young coach and a veteran.

Twenty seven minutes on the clock, Mason Mount’s blissful dribbling skills benefited him as he beat two defenders, only for his shot to let him down. Before the half-hour mark, Harry Kane’s free kick wasn’t solid enough to trouble Mendy between the sticks.

Chelsea continued to mount pressure Tottenham’s defensive unit till the end of the first half, no goal was recorded going into the break, in spite of five significant attempts apiece.

Three minutes after the restart, Tammy Abraham was put on the spot as he failed to connect with Reece James’ delightful cross. Abraham will go on to throw away two other inviting crosses from Reece James and Timo Werner in the 49th and 63rd minute.

A clearance from a Chelsea corner by the Tottenham defense was hard for N’golo Kante to deal with, until Edouard Mendy rushed out from his post to play it out for a throw-in before Son Heung Min could capitalize on the error.

Chelsea, which were dominant in the second half, continued to cross the balls into the box. A Ben Chilwell ball from the left flank was well controlled by Hakim Ziyech in the box, however, he couldn’t provide an end product.

Ten minutes from time, Hugo Lloris’ showbiz save from Mason Mount’s fine strike kept the game at 0-0. Mendy was inspired by his adversary and interfered with Son’s cross to push it away from an approaching Spurs player.

In injury time, Olivier Giroud was unable to repeat his heroics in the Champions League as he missed a great chance and Giovani Lo Celso walked down the same road as Giroud at the other end of the pitch.

A match between two familiar faces which caused a tactical battle ended in a goalless stalemate.

For Chelsea, it was two points dropped and Jose Mourinho will be satisfied with a point as Tottenham have leapfrogged past Liverpool to go top of the league.
