Olivier Giroud had a night to remember as his four goals were all Chelsea needed to triumph over Sevilla in the Champions League. Giroud’s four-goal haul has cemented Chelsea’s position as Group E winners.

The France World Cup winner became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League at 34 years and 63 days. Also, he achieved a milestone of being just the second player to a score a UEFA Champions League hat-trick for two different English sides (Arsenal and Chelsea), after Michael Owen (Liverpool and Manchester United).

His first goal came from an assist from Kai Havertz in the 8th minute to stun Chelsea’s Spanish hosts, who were unbeaten in 14 home matches in all European competitions coming into the game. Sevilla’s players would be left jaw-dropped again  in the second half when Giroud latched onto Matteo Kovacic’s pass to dispatch his second goal of the night.

N’golo Kante’s cross met Olivier Giroud’s head for a well placed header in the 74th minute for his hat-trick. The icing was put on the cake when Giroud won a penalty and went on to convert from the spot with seven minutes left on the clock. He relished one of his best games ever as a footballer.

The Blues have won two Champions League games by at least four goals under Lampard. Only under Jose Mourinho did they have more such wins.
