Nigerians Humour 45-Year-Old New NANS President

At a time many are championing for youths to take over politics with the “Not Too Young To Run” bill, Nigerians have been awed with the emergence of a 45-year old civil-servant, Sunday Asefon,  president of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS).

GWG notes that the student body conducted its election on Thursday and it was characterised by violence as media reports stated that some persons were injured from  gunshots and machetes.

However, normalcy returned and the students completed the election and Asefon got 155 votes to defeat his closest rival, Olushola Oladoja, who scored 100 votes.

Asefon will now replace Bamidele Akpan.

However, his emergence has sparked wave of reactions as many felt that at a time when the youths are campaigning for greater participation in the political affairs of Nigeria, that it was improper for a 45-year-old man to be the president of a body that is predominantly youth based.

Many social media users took to the micro-blogging platform, twitter to express their views concerning the issue and GWG brings some of them:

This sporadic shooting during NANS Convention is an annual ritual that must be observed in order to test the ruggedity of candidates contesting for NANS Presidency. But normalcy has been restored and things are moving smoothly.”

Great Oracle@AbdulMahmud01 wrote: “Heard a 43 years old has been elected NANS President. That’s twice the age I was elected NANS President on 22 November 1990. How can a man in midlife crisis fight students causes? Nigeria is a parody!”
Akintunde O. Babatunde@olorunwababs wrote: “This is supposed to be a gathering of student leaders right? NANS and its very unfortunate reality. How are we sure of better days ahead when student election is more like PDP and APC rally?”

Afolabi Alawode OFR@AlawodeAfolabii wrote: “Lol. Meet Grandpa Sunday Asefon, the newly elected NANS President. This man should be in his 50s. How do you expect this old man to lead any fruitful struggle? Shame!”
