The no love lost relationship between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his immediate predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was heading for another low on Monday after the state legislature wiped away one of the memorable legacies of the former governor.

The development came after the Edo State House of Assembly approved an amendment bill that changed the name of the state owned Edo University, Iyamho.

The university was changed to Edo State University, Uzaire vide an amendment bill presented by Governor Obaseki.

The significant amendments changed the name of the university and its location.

A source said the renaming was done to reflect the desire of key stakeholders.

Though no political imputation was laced to the move, GWG, however, reports that the move is bound to elicit the political interests of stakeholders.

The university project was a personal drive by the former governor who saw to the recruitment of some of the best hands available for the university. Even more, the university was also provided some of the best facilities in the world.

Explaining the change in the name of the host of the university from Iyamho to Uzaire, the source said:
“The university is mainly sited in Uzaire and Uzaire is made up of three clans including Iyamho which is the smallest of the three.

“Though all three clans contributed land to the university many in the other clans were not happy that because other clans were not given a sense of belonging as if only Iyamho contributed the land.

“You know we had a similar situation before. When Ambrose Alli established the former Bendel State University it was located in his hometown, Maudo, but it was named after Ekpoma because, Maudo was just a small community compared to Ekpoma which is the bigger community.”

The development is, however, based to raise political undertones given the fact that Iyamho is Comrade Oshiomhole’s village and the deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu claims Uzaire too.

Shaibu had partnered Mr. Obaseki to bring down the once towering political legacy built by Oshiomhole in Edo State after the pair overcame the former governor’s strong objections to achieve a second term victory last September.

The renaming and re-designation of a school founded by Oshiomhole by his political rivals is bound to further elicit comments of further desecration of the former governor’s legacy.
