Kate Henshaw, Nigerians Mock NCC Directive On Linking NIN To SIM Cards
By Emmanuel Adigwe
The recent directive by the authorities to telecommunications companies to block SIM not registered with the National Identity Numbers, NIN has attracted strong backlash from many Nigerians with Nollywood star Kate Henshaw leading the charge.
GWG had earlier reported that the minister of Communications, Isa Isa Pantami, had issued a statement ordering the telecommunications companies to comply with the directive.
Operators require ALL their subscribers to provide a valid National Identification Number (NIN) to update SIM registration records.
The submission of NIN by subscribers is to take place within two weeks December 16, 2020 to December, 2020.
After the deadline, ALL SIMs without NINs are to be blocked from the networks. A Ministerial Task Force comprising the Minister and all the CEOs (among others) as members is to monitor compliance by all networks.
Violations of this directive will be met by stiff sanctions, including the possibility of withdrawal of operating license. This development has sparked reactions as many Nigerians took to the micro-blogging platform to condemn the directive as many recounted how troubling acquiring the NIN was.
Popular Activist, Aisha Yesufu, pointed out that Nigerians were denied COVID-19 palliative and imposed all sorts of taxes and charges as the NCC generated a code for subscribers to know if their numbers were linked to NIN but at a fee of N20.
Also, popular actress, Kate Henshaw and TV personality, Ebuka Obi-Ochendu also expressed their displeasure over the directive.
