Prominent member of the Board of Trustees of the People Democratic Party, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has come under political fire after endorsing a second term for the All Progressives Congress, APC’s governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma.

The attack is coming from the PDP and the apex socio-cultural organization representing the interests of the Owerri people, of which, Iwanyanwu is seen as a leading light.

Iwuanyanwu had at a recent reception by the Owerri people given the governor the assurance that the Owerri people would back him for a second term should he so desire.

The endorsement is against the background of mutterings that Uzodinma is from Orlu, the area that had held the governorship of the state for all but five years since the advent of the democratic dispensation in 1999.

Orlu produced Governors Achike Udenwa and Rochas Okorocha who served 16 years together and also Uzodinma who is now governor. The only exceptions were Ikedi Ohakim from Okigwe who served four years and Emeka Ihedioha from Owerri whose term was disrupted after eight months by the Supreme Court judgment that enthroned Uzodinma from Orlu.

Responding to Iwuanyanwu’s endorsement of Uzodinma, the PDP Owerri zone in a statement issued by the Zonal PDP Publicity Secretary, Kizzito Onuoha, said, “It is unfortunate and quite embarrassing that Chief Iwuanyanwu who should have been at the very forefront of the call for strict adherence to the Imo charter of equity and total balancing in the context of Imo political tripod, could allow himself to be used as an instrument of sabotage to his people of Owerri zone.”

“We therefore totally and completely distance and disassociate ourselves from Iwuanyanwu’s unfortunate speech as it does not represent our position, vision and interest and wish to state in very clear terms that Owerri zone is focused and determined more than ever before to ensure that the continued injustice meted to Owerri zone is put to an end.”

The President General of Olu Owerri, Chief Martin Opara, was also quick to distance the Owerri people from the endorsement saying that Chief Iwuanyanwu spoke for himself and that his views did not reflect the opinion of the majority of the Owerri people.
