Man U, Masters Of Comeback Set New Away Record

Manchester United outmuscled Sheffield United 3-2 on Thursday night to move into sixth position on the Premier League log. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s outfit also became the first side to win six Premier League away games after conceding first.

Dean Henderson in goal for Manchester United had himself to blame when his overconfidence on the ball gave the Blades the lead five minutes into the game. Henderson failed to decide quickly on what he wanted to do with ball. This allowed a charging Oliver Burke to dispossess him and set up McGoldrick for an empty net.

The masters of comebacks this season responded quickly with two goals in seven minutes. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were picked out by Victor Lindelof and Paul Pogba, then the duo of attackers finished instinctively. Martial and Rashford ensured that the Red Devils were leading 2-1 at halftime.

Six minutes into the second half, Paul Pogba’s piece of skill ignited a counterattack which was finished off by Marcus Rashford for his second of the game. Magnificent teenager, Mason Greenwood almost gave Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s men a three-goal cushion when he took aim from inside the box, but, it was kept out by Sheffield’s number one.

In the 86th minute, McGoldrick scored his second goal of the game when Victor Lindelof’s attempt to head away from a corner kick touched the back of McGoldrick’s head for the ball to land inside the net.

Henderson was again called into action when Mousset’s volley in the 91st minute had to be dealt with to avoid a share of the spoils.

Manchester United are currently the fourth side in English top-flight history to record 10 consecutive away league wins, after Spurs (10 between April & October 1960), Chelsea (11 between April & December 2008) and Manchester City (11 between May & December 2017).

The Red Devils have now scored at least twice in 10 consecutive away league games. The longest such run by a team in the top-flight since Spurs in October 1960 (also 10). Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side can climb to second position if they win their outstanding game against Burnley.

Meanwhile, Chelsea lost to Wolves, Manchester City were held by West Brom at the Etihad Stadium, Liverpool saw off Tottenham and Arsenal salvaged a point against a well-to-do Southampton side.
