The Presidential Taskforce (PTF) on COVID-19 on Wednesday stated how much the COVID-19 vaccine will cost Nigerians when it is eventually made available.
It will be distributed FREE! That is bound to come as a surprise to many Nigerians given the normally hostile attitude of Nigerian governments to citizens when it comes to services.
National Coordinator of PTF, Sani Aliyu, revealed the government’s unusual gesture in an interview.
According to Aliyu, President Buhari has given the PTF the directive to proceed with preparations with regard to administering the vaccine.
He said: “The President has also given us a marching order that the COVID-19 vaccine be made available in Nigeria,” he said on Channels Television on Wednesday.
He disclosed that the vaccine will be available in the country making use of the GAVI arrangement.
Aliyu said: “We already have the assurance that we will have 20% of our population accommodated by GAVI, which is about 40 million Nigerians. They won’t need to pay for that (the vaccine).”
He however pointed out that the challenge with the virus would be the acceptance of the vaccination.
He said: “The biggest challenge we will have with the vaccine is not going to be the logistics, the biggest challenge will be the public acceptance of the safety of the vaccines and allowing themselves to be vaccinated, the challenge will be very similar to the one we have with polio.”
