Edo Election Petition Tribunal

The University of Ibadan certificate purportedly issued to Godwin Obaseki emerged on Thursday as the alleged certificate forgery trial of the Edo State governor took a twist.

The twist came as the forgery trial was forced to adjourn to next Monday because of the ill-health of the judge handling the case, Justice Ahmed Mohammed.

A chieftain of the APC, Mr. Williams Edobor in Edo State  had in cahoots with his party dragged Obaseki to court alleging that he forged the University of Ibadan certificate he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC for the purpose of contesting the 2019 governorship election.

The trial which was supposed to resume by 12.00 noon on Thursday was, however, not able to resume. By 2.00 p.m. when he took his seat, Justice Mohammed, however, apologized saying that he was attacked by a severe bout of malaria.

He as such said that the day’s hearing would be abridged.

His assertion received the support of the plaintiff and defence counsels with the APC counsel, Chief Akin Olujimi, SAN responding that all the lawyers wished him well and wanted him well above all else.

He acquiesced to the suggestion of Obaseki’s counsel, Mr. Ken Mozia, SAN that the case be shnifted to next Monday.

Following the judge’s affirmation of the suggestion the case was adjourned to next Monday.

Following the hearing as he stepped out of the court, Obaseki’s lead counsel, Mr Ken Mozia, SAN spoke to reporters shocked all when he presented the original Bachelor of Arts Degree Certificate of the University of Ibadan, awarded the governor in 1979.

Mr. Mozia said that Obaseki’s certificate is intact boasting that the governor had nothing to hide.

He brought out the certificate and promised to tender it before the court at the next adjourned date.

The case which is a pre-election matter is expected to lapse by January 13. The APC’s desire of taking over power is hinged on the case succeeding because the party did not file any petition against the victory of Obaseki in the September 19, 2020 election.
