NDDC crisis

President Muhammadu Buhari’s intentions towards the Niger Delta has put Ijaw Youth Council, IYC leaders at war over the NDDC.

The acrimony follows the the decision of zonal leaders of the IYC to reject the decision of national president of the body, Peter Igbifa to suspend the planned mass action to shut down the headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

Indicaitons to the effect that the IYC leaders are at war over NDDC emerged at the end of a meeting on Tuesday where they resolved to forge ahead with the mass action against the NDDC. The mass action it was said would be a way of protesting the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari to inaugurate the board of the NDDC as provided by the law establishing it.

The IYC had initially taken a decision on mass action that would see the youths marching to the Port-Harcourt headquarters of the agency. However, the national president issued a communique suspending the planned action.

However, following a meeting of zonal leaders it was resolved to forge ahead with the mass action irrespective of the ideas of the national president, Igbifa seemingly indicating that the IYC leaders are at war over NDDC.

A communique to that effect was endorsed by Mr Tobin James (Chairman, Eastern Zone), Chief Frank Akiefa, (Chairman Western zone),  Mr Clever Osuma Inodu, (Chairman Central zone) and Chief Diplomat Adam Ogomugo Marbo (Chairman Abuja Chapter).

in a joint statement issued in Yenagoa, they declared that the planned protest and shut down of the NDDC headquarters is an aimed at drawing attention to the breaches of the NDDC Act as done by President Muhammadu Buhari.

They said that the consequence of the action was to under-develop the region.

While urging the citizenry to disregard the communique from Igbifa, they said that the decision to shut down the NDDC was already in top gear and cannot be reversed except through the immediate inauguration of the NDDC board.

”Peter Timothy Igbifa never supported the agitations of a substantive board for NDDC and so doesn’t have any right to halt or call for the stoppage of the protest.

“The only reason that will stop the protest is for President Muahammadu Buhari to do the right thing by appointing the substantive board in NDDC that will carry out it functions properly. We are calling on every well-meaning Ijaw youths not to be distracted by the statement of Peter Timothy Igbifa which does not reflect the decision of Council,” they noted in the statement.

National spokesman of the IYC, Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe GWG gathered confirmed the development to the Sun apparenlty confimring that the IYC leader are at war over NDDC.

He said:

”It is people driven and oriented protest that cannot be cancelled by anybody who has never been a part of the ongoing protests in the region. The protest will go on according to plans as all structures of Council have been fully notified for the show down and they are all ready and waiting for the signal”.
