Chinendum Orji Speaks On Being Beaten By Soldiers

Published

on

Orji Speaker

Rt. Hon. Chinendum Orji, son of the immediate past governor of Abia State, Senator Theodore Orji has opened up on reports that he was brutalized by soldiers after he slapped an army captain while his father was governor. According to long-held rumours, Chinendum Orji was beaten to pulp after he slapped an army captain.

Chinendum according to reports which swirled around the state and social media had reportedly gone to Capital Supermarket in Umuahia and ordered all shoppers out of the premises to enable him as son of the governor do his shopping in privacy.

An army captain in mufti who supposedly challenged him was said to have been slapped. The army captain was said to have then summoned soldiers from Ohafia who came and beat Chinendum Orji to pulp with marks over his body.

It is a story that had circulated around Abia for a long time.

Reacting for the first time to the story, Orji who is now speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly in a rare interview with Sun opened up and gave his side of the story.

He said:

“If not that this interview were an official engagement, I would have worn a short and come out here so that you could see if there are stitches they claimed are on my legs, from alleged beating I got from soldiers.

“The story was that I entered a supermarket, cleared everybody and slapped an army officer. Do I look like somebody who will slap an army officer and still be alive today? An army Captain? Me? They said I stayed in that place and the Army Captain made a call to Ohafia and soldiers came to deal with me. From Umuahia to Ohafia is about one and half hours.

“So I stayed in the shop, still shopping and soldiers came all the way from Ohafia to Umuahia to beat me to pulp? Can’t you see that it does not add up. All were mere propaganda. It never happened.

“Remember that this happened at the period we had misunderstanding with my father’s predecessor. People took advantage of it to say so many bad things about me. There is no way I was trained to enter a place and chase out every other person. It’s not possible.

“I don’t even go out. I don’t think anybody will say he has seen me in most places in Umuahia. So, the myth around me was created by some people for their own selfish interest. They demonised me to give my father a bad name. There was nothing they did not ascribe to me just to bring me down.

“I am not arrogant. I am the humblest person you can meet. It’s just that I turned myself to a hermit when my father was a governor. I decided to be alone, but they still came and looked for me for one favour or the other. The name, Ikuku, came about because God has been with me. So many things people tried against me didn’t work.  That name was given to me by one of my uncles. Ikuku means breeze. You can’t catch it; you can’t see it, but you can feel it.

“I am telling you that those things said about me then were untrue. Within that period it hurt me, but these days it doesn’t. There is nothing you will say now that will hurt me. Perhaps, the only thing you will say now that will hurt me is that I’m pregnant at FMC (Federal Medical Centre), Umuahia.  (Laughs).”

Wike’s Men Mum As Fubara Garners More Support In Rivers

Fubara Garners More Support in Rivers

Amidst the ongoing conflict between Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and his Godfather, Nyesom Wike, a family support group in the state has pledged support for the governor.

GWG.ng reports that the Family Support Group, which is an assemblage of Rivers youths, women and men drawn from the three senatorial districts and 23 local government areas, on Wednesday, declared their support for the governor while they were on a solidarity visit to the Government House in Port Harcourt.

This was also disclosed in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi.

According to the statement, the group was received on Fubara’s behalf by the Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke.

Governor Fubara said, “The whole land of Rivers State stands in affirmation that we won the election fairly, and deserve to serve out our full tenure. There is not going to be anything that will cut short the popular mandate that you all gave to this administration.”

Nwaeke said he recalled that just  within weeks of assuming office, Fubara flagged off the Port Harcourt Ring Road project “that will transverse six local governments.”

He said though the project was meant to be within 36 months, the delivery day might even be shorter “because the progress of work we have seen is beyond what we were thinking.”

“The Trans-Kalabari Kalabari Road, very soon, the official main Trans-Kalabari Road will start and will begin from Port Harcourt. That road, a lot of plans have been done, very soon, you will see contractors on site, and Rivers State will be opened.

“Just yesterday, you heard in the news also that the governor has commenced the construction of the Elele-Egbeda-Omoku Road. That road was initially done with one lane, but now, he is going to dualise it. The government has already awarded the contract,” he added.

Nwaeke urged the people of Rivers State to continue to defend Fubara. Remain unshakable. Keep your word of defending him at all times.

“When you hear anything outside, be bold, defend the governor, and tell the people the things you know about him. Tell them what you know he has done to develop the state and the people,” he added.

In his address, the President General of Family Support Group, Mr Henry Abraham, recalled that during the 2023 elections, they were encouraged to vote and defend their votes because the process was violence-free and credible.

Abraham said, “When we defend our votes, we will also defend the man we voted for. We are a Family Support Group, Rivers State belongs to all of us. Rivers State is not a personal estate of one man, it’s for all Rivers people.

“Sir Siminalayi Fubara, stand firm. The Family Support Group is with you. All the wards’ coordinators are with you. All the wards’ executives are with you. All the LGA coordinators are with you. All the officers of the National Executive Committee are with you. All our leaders are with you, and the PDP is with you.”

Consequently, the governor vowed to do everything legally to improve and protect the collective aspirations of the people, saying he deserved to serve out his tenure.

Food Crisis: Obi Raises Fresh Alarm, Says The Terror And Bandits Effect Is Worrisome

Published

on

Obi on farmers and bandits

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General election, Peter Gregory Obi, has for umpteenth times cried out that hunger and famine await Nigeria if farmers are denied access to farms by bandits and terrorists.

Obi, who was reacting to publications and the international agency’s warning on the matter,  said the alarm should be given adequate attention.

Writing on his X handle the LP standard bearer said “I  just read on the daily this morning, about the concerns being expressed by stakeholders in our agriculture sector over the worsening food insecurity in Nigeria.

“I have remained consistent in public voicing out my worries over this growing food crisis, which has even continued to claim the lives of our fellow citizens.  I do believe that the urgency required to address these issues cannot be over-emphasized.

He continued, “The report this morning reads, in part, “The number of food-insecure Nigerians increased significantly, from 66.2 million in Q1 2023 to 100 million in Q1 2024 (WFP, 2024), with 18.6 million facing acute hunger and 43.7 million Nigerians showing crisis-level or above crisis-level hunger- coping strategies as of March 2024.

“While the above report gives an understanding of the present and impending food crisis looming large on the nation, the present realities show that we are already in a worse situation than is presented in the report.

“An earlier similar report by Cadre Harmonise stated that about 31.5 million Nigerians are projected to face acute hunger by the June-August of this year.

Obi added, “What is now very worrisome is that many Nigerians have lost their lives in their quest to find food, reflecting a very acute level of hunger not yet captured in the media. We are gradually descending to the level of the survival of the fittest, where, driven by hunger and a quest for survival, one loses every sense of order to do the unthinkable.

“With the recurrent bandits and terror attacks on farmers, many of them have abandoned their farms. It is reported that in a state like Sokoto, farmers have paid an accumulated sum of N3 billion in ransom to bandits, others pay as high as N100,000 to bandits to gain access to their farmlands. About 165 farmers have reportedly lost their lives to insecurity this year alone.

“It is, therefore, a matter of urgency, for the government to solve the problems of insecurity in the country. This will in turn reduce the problems of food insecurity when farmers safely return to their farms. A New and hunger-free Nigeria is POssible.”

BREAKING: Obi Mum As BoT Sacks Abure

Published

on

By

Abure BoT

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Labour Party (LP) has sacked the Julius Abure led National Working Committee, NWC of the party and taken over the running of the party pending what it said will be an all-inclusive national convention.

A statement issued on Wednesday night by the BoT, through its Chairman, Comrade S.O.Z. Ejiofor, chastised the Abure leadership over what it described as a secret national convention held on Wednesday, at Nnewi in Anambra State, where Abure was returned as national chairman.

It described the convention as a charade.

The statement reads: “Following the expiration of the tenure in office of the immediate past National Working Committee of the Labour Party headed by Mr. Julius Abure, the Board of Trustees of the Labour Party, in line with the Labour Party Constitution, has stepped in to steer the affairs of the Labour Party.

“This step is to avoid any leadership vacuum in the Labour Party.

“Furthermore, the Board of Trustees of the Labour Party, in consultation with major stakeholders in the Party, will soon communicate the processes for the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive National Convention of the Labour Party.

“This is in line with the March 20, 2018, Federal High Court consent judgement delivered by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, which recognised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as the owner of the Labour Party and mandated that an all-inclusive and expansive National Convention of the Labour Party be held.

“The decision of the Board of Trustees is also in furtherance of the agreement signed between the former National Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Julius Abure, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on 27th June 2022, which was mediated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“While we commend members of the Labour Party, especially workers, students, youths, market women and men, Obidients, and candidates on the platform of the Labour Party for their contributions and fidelity to the ideals of the party, the Board of Trustees promises to quickly set in motion processes for the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive National Convention.

“Unlike the charade that took place today in Nnewi and in tandem with the principles of popular democracy, the all-inclusive National Convention will start with grassroots congresses at ward, local government, state and ultimately at the national level.

“This process will not leave any genuine member of the Labour Party out and will be held in the full view of the Independent National Electoral Commission, media, civil society, security agents and the general public.

“We commend the leader of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi and key stakeholders in the Labour Party for declining to deodorise the malfeasance that took place in Nnewi with their presence.

“The BOT assures all stakeholders that we are committed to reclaiming and repositioning the Labour Party as the vehicle for the socio-political emancipation of our dear country, her working people and populace.”

GWG.ng reports that earlier on Wednesday, Abure was re-elected as the National Chairman of the Labour Party at a controversial national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State that saw the absence of major stakeholders including the 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi and the party’s only governor, Alex Otti of Abia State.

Meanwhile, Obi has remained mum over the unfolding development inspired by the BoT and his stance on the sacked Abure led leadership.

NLC Rejects Abure’s Election As Labour Party Chairman

Published

By

Ajaero reacts to Abure

The leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has vowed not to accord the National Chairman of Labour Party, Julius Abure, any form of recognition following his re-election.

Abure was returned as the party national chairman at a national convention of the party held in Nnewi, Anambra State, on Wednesday.

The convention also saw all members of the National Working Committee return.

The slots for representatives of both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress were, however, left vacant.

Reacting to the outcome of the convention, NLC spokesman, Benson Upah, vowed that the congress will never back the party under Abure’s leadership.

While describing the convention as a charade, Upah told our reporter that the return of the national chairman was a nullity as far as the NLC is concerned.

He said, “It’s an illegality, a nullity. The whole exercise was a charade! Nothing can legitimise such brazen impunity.”

When asked for labour’s next line of action, the NLC head of information, who replied via a text message, wrote, “You, wait and see.”

The national convention of party had generated so much heat in the last week.

At least five persons were reportedly apprehended at the convention ground on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to foment trouble at the arena.

The arrested persons were said to be distributing inciting leaflets critical of the leadership of the party.

They were eventually handed over to the police for questioning.

In a communiqué jointly signed by Abure and his National Secretary, Umar Farouk, the party announced that the presidential flag bearer of LP, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, have been cleared to contest as the party’s candidates again in 2027.

The statement partly read, “The convention in session, based on the antecedents of the presidential candidate before, during and after the 2023 general election, recommended that the 2027 presidential ticket of the party be solely reserved for His Excellency, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, the national leader of the party.

“Furthermore, the convention in session reviewed the ongoing development and performance of its Governor in Abia state, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, and passed a vote of confidence on him and recommended the 2027 Abia State gubernatorial ticket of the party be reserved for His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti.”

Continuing, the leadership of the party called on President Bola Tinubu to address the rising cases of insecurity ravaging, particularly Kaduna and some other northern states.

The party also threw its weight behind the restructuring and decentralisation of policing architecture to pave the way for regional, state, and local police.

“The convention in session also noted with concerns the renewed insecurity in the country, especially Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, and other states. The convention hereby calls on the President as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to secure the lives and properties of Nigerians, which is the primary responsibility of the government.

“We also call for general restructuring of the security architecture to meet up with current security challenges facing the nation. The convention advocated for decentralisation of the Nigerian Police Force to pave the way for regional, state, local, and community policing,” it stated.

Obi, Otti Get Labour Party 2027 Endorsements Despite Boycotting Convention

Published

Labour Party Obi 2027 Otti

The Labour Party (LP) has set its sights on the future, declaring Mr. Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential candidate, as the preferred nominee for the 2027 general election. Additionally, the party has endorsed Governor Alex Otti of Abia State as its gubernatorial candidate for the same election cycle. These decisions were formalized during the LP national convention at the Grand Season Hotel in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Despite their absence at the convention, both Obi and Otti received unanimous support from party members. Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu led a delegation comprising State Executive Council members and LP-elected National and State Assembly members from Abia State.

However, notable LP representatives from Anambra State, except Hon. George Ozodinobi, deputy minority whip of the House of Representatives, were absent.

At the convention, nine out of the 22 members of the National Working Committee (NWC), including national chairman Barr. Julius Abure, were re-elected.

In a communique, convention delegates highlighted Obi and Otti’s dignified conduct, earning the confidence of party leadership and supporters, leading to their adoption as LP candidates for the presidency and governorship, respectively, in 2027.
Meanwhile, Obi is yet to give a response to his 2027 endorsement by the Labour Party.

Why Delta State Assembly Reversed Sack Of Accountant After 24 Years

Published

By

Delta State House of Assembly has reversed the Post Primary Education Board’s termination of Emmanuel Emenetie’s employment 24 years ago.

GWG.ng learnt that Emenetie had written a petition to the Assembly on February 17, 2000, claiming that the Post Primary Education Board had unlawfully terminated his employment.

https://gwg.ng/2024/03/27/why-i-granted-full-autonomy-to-local-government-councils-governor-alia/

In the petition, Emenetie prayed for his reinstatement as Permanent Secretary to be on par with his colleagues in service and for all financial benefits to take effect from the termination date.

He also requested the sum of N4,800,000.00 as compensation for the number of years he was out of employment.

However, in a unanimous decision during Tuesday’s sitting, presided over by the Speaker, Hon Emomotimi Guwor, the lawmakers stated that the sack was in clear violation of the law and should be set aside.

While recommending that Emenetie be paid all his salaries/emoluments, lawmakers directed that all benefits be paid from the date of his unlawful termination of employment.

While commending the Public Petitions Committee report, the Speaker directed the Clerk of the House to inform the appropriate authorities of the House’s decision and mandated the Deputy Speaker to do a follow-up for compliance.

The lawmakers said, “He should be paid other benefits he is entitled to from the date of the unlawful termination of his employment through the rank to the position of Director, which is supposed to be at least his present rank, and through to the date of his supposed retirement.

“That Mr Emmanuel Emenetie be made to retire at the grade level of a Director. That the Chairman of the Post Primary Education Board and Head of Service of Delta State be directed that the recommendations/directives of the house as contained in paragraphs 1-3 above are complied with forthwith.”
