Edo: Why APC Spokesman Was Stopped By Tribunal
The Edo State Election Petition Tribunal has disallowed the publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chris Azebamwan, from giving testimony in an election petition raised against the election of Godwin Obaseki.
Obaseki won the September 19, 2020 election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Though APC did not file a petition against the election result having taken the route of removing Obaseki through an alleged certificate forgery suit, the party’s spokesman, Azebamwan was, however, called to give testimony against the election result by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The APM had filed a petition against the declaration of Obaseki as governor on the claim that the governor and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, were not qualified to contest the election.
Azebamwan, the APC spokesman was called by the APM to give testimony in that regard.
However, at the resumption of hearing on Wednesday, the PDP’s lawyer, Chris Uche (SAN), opposed Azebamwan appearing saying that it would amount to bringing in fresh evidence through the “backdoor and smuggling” witness statement on oath.
