Kukah’s Issue Enters Yoruba – Fulani Eviction Saga

The arrest order on popular Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Igboho was at the weekend drawing in the case of the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, Matthew Kuhah. Nigerians in an online campaign were asking why a similar arrest order was not given on Kukah’s issue after he was served notice to leave Sokoto recently.

Nigerians were also running commentaries that similar eviction notices had in the past been given to the Igbo to leave the North with those who gave the order not being threatened with arrest.

Popular activist, Aisha Yesufu led the campaign as the saga over the eviction notice to the Fulani from Oyo State by Sunday Igboho resonated across the polity.

GWG reports that Igboho, had earlier handed a seven-day quit notice to herders in Oyo State and at the end of the notice, he and his followers stormed Igangan in Ibarapa Local Government in Oyo State to evict the herders.

According to reports, the home of Seriki, the leader of the herders  was attacked and burnt. Igboho has, however, since announced that he never destroyed the home of the Fulani leader as he said that the Yoruba locals effected the sack order.

Presidency spokesman, Garba Shehu, had in his reaction stated that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the arrest of Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho.

According to Garba Shehu the order given by the Inspector General of Police, for now, was that Igboho should be arrested and brought to Abuja to be taken to court to face prosecution.

This development has sparked reactions as many condemned the IGP’s order  describing it as one-sided saying that the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto State, Hassan Kukah, was recently threatened and the government and the police kept mute.

To them, if the Yoruba activist will be arrested and prosecuted, Kukah’s issue must also not be swept under the carpet as they insisted that those who gave Bishop Kukah quit notice should also face the same punishment.
