The national leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC has snubbed arguments of Bola Tinubu’s Camp against proceeding with the planned membership registration exercise.

The Tinubu camp speaking through Rep. James Faleke had expressed concern that going ahead with the exercise could complicate the country’s COVID-19 crisis.

Responding to the plea, the APC pledged to abide by all COVID-19 protocols during the membership registration exercise scheduled to commence on February 2.

Concern Of Tinubu’s Camp

Faleke, a protegee of the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Tinubu, in his open letter to the Chairman of the party’s Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Governor Mai Mala Buni had warned against proceeding the exercise as scheduled given the second wave of COVID-19 in the country.

“The Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Mr. Boss Mustapha, had warned that the second wave of the pandemic would be more dangerous and deadly. Events since the beginning of the year have proven him right”, Faleke had said.

But responding on Tuesday, Secretary of the Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the party, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe while appreciating Faleke’s fears, and obviously the apprehension of Tinubu’s camp, said:

“On behalf of the Chairman of the CECPC, His Excellency Mai Mala Buni, the Executive Governor of Yobe state, we thank Hon. James Faleke for his concerns. We appreciate all the issues raised in his open letter but as a Committee we are guided by the directive of NEC on the conduct of the registration exercise and we wish to state that the exercise will continue as scheduled.

“In doing this,  we shall ensure full compliance with the PTF protocols on COVID-19 in the cause of this exercise. Our registration officers will adequately be trained to observe the protocols by the PTF.

“The truth is that this exercise is unit based. There will be no need for crowd. Recently, INEC conducted elections and the COVID-19 protocol was adhered to. The registration is not a day exercise. It is a continuous one and we assure our members of their safety and protection.

“We are committed to carrying out this exercise as scheduled in view of the life time of the Caretaker Committee”, he added.
