20 Generals May Exit As New Service Chiefs Step In
As many as 20 generals may exit the services with the appointment of new service chiefs it has emerged. Top on the list is Lt. Gen. Lamidi Adeosun, who had acted as number two to the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai.
Those it is believed will exit the services are those in Courses 34 and 35.
President Muhammadu Buhari had after dithering procrastination sacked the former service chiefs and appointed a new set of service chiefs.
The new service chiefs appointed by the president were Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General Lucky Irabor; Chief of Army Staff, Major-General I. Attahiru; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air-Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao.
Irabor is a member of Course 34 while the new service chiefs were members of course 35.
In announcing the dismissal of the service chiefs, Mr. Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity had said:
“President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the immediate resignation of the service chiefs, and their retirement from service.
“Those involved are the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
“President Buhari thanks the outgoing Service Chiefs for what he calls their ‘overwhelming achievements in our efforts at bringing enduring peace to our dear country,’ wishing them well in their future endeavours.
It has now emerged that as many as 20 generals may exit including Lt. Gen. Lamidi Adeosun, the Chief of Policy and Plans, Army headquarters may have to go.
Lt. Gen. Adeosun was widely regarded as the army’s number two man and was promoted to the same rank as Buratai in 2019.
It is feared that the exit of the generals many of who saw combat in Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Northeast may weaken the institutional memory of the army as it engages the Boko Haram insurgency.
