Life For Tuchel Begins Slowly At Chelsea
By Ekene Dike
Chelsea’s first game after the dismissal of Frank Lampard and new life under Thomas Tuchel began with a goalless draw against Wolves at Stamford Bridge.
It was a less exciting game in terms of opportunities created as Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves outfit were tight at the back with Chelsea tasked to unlock the defense.
Ruben Neves’ 21st minute free kick went over the bar, before Hakim Ziyech provided a fine cross to Anthony Rudiger minutes later. Rudiger, however, rose highest to nod it above the goalpost. Just five minutes before the break, Dendoncker also failed to keep his header down as the first half ended scoreless.
After the break, Chelsea threw more men forward and at the half hour mark, Ben Chilwell was presented with a golden opportunity to bail Thomas Tuchel out of jail after he was teed up by Kai Havertz in the box, only for him to misfire his shot into the empty stands.
Benjamin Mendy was tasked in goal by the shots of Neto in the 70th and 75th minutes as the deadlock couldn’t be broken.
At the other end, a nice exchange of play by the Blues enabled Mateo Kovacic to curl his effort agonizingly wide.
With Chelsea playing on borrowed time, Calum Hudson-Odoi was thwarted by Rui Patricio before the referee blew the final whistle.
It was a frustrating game on a frustrating night as both sides fired blank. Tuchel who was on the touchline after just two days of taking over, will be hoping to motivate his desolated Blues in the upcoming fixtures.
