2023 Tumult: Does Bakare Want Osinbajo’s Job?
By Chuks Ekpeneru
The Senior Pastor, Citadel Global Community Church (CGCC), formerly known as the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare has again spoken of his desire to rule Nigeria. However, his latest outing with posers on Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has raised questions as to whether the man of God wants Osinbajo’s job.
Speaking during a Tuesday night Instagram Live Chat with popular journalist, Dele Momodu, the fiery cleric said he has something to offer Nigerians.
Bakare quest to reach the highest political seat in the land is not new. He was the running mate of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2011 presidential election and would have had Osinbajo’s job in 2011 if Buhari had succeeded in that election.
As the 2023 election lurks around the corner, Bakare has continued to say he is eminently qualified for the top job. He also recently caused a stir when he appeared to change his stance on All Progressives Congress, APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu when he flayed his critics for not according the former governor his due respect.
Was Bakare trying to worm his way into Tinubu’s embrace given the popular insinuations that the powers that be are determined to stop Tinubu so he could be propped up?
Whatever, Bakare has a Herculean task displacing the juggernauts who are already filling the political space.
Among those that will stand his way is a man with whom he has so many things in common.
That is the current Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo. They are both clerics, lawyers and from Ogun State. They were also brought up by Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
Though Osinbajo has not publicly declared his intention for the top job, the Vice-president is undoubtedly the closest to the top post given his present position. He may well be quietly weighing his options.
If for anything, Osinbajo should inherit the seat from his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari, who some say he has served diligently.
No doubt, Bakare knows that his ‘brother’, Osinbajo may be silent on his ambition but as to whether he wants Osinbajo’s job as a step to the top job is open to question.
So when on Instagram Live Chat, Bakare asked Prof Osinbajo to resign as Vice-president if he is not being allowed to perform his role, it sent messages to the discerning mind. Some asked, does Bakare want Osinbajo’s job?
According to Bakare “I do not know if that statement is true that he is not allowed to perform because the constitution is very clear on what the role of the vice-president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is, especially as it relates to steering the economy of the nation.
“Before I accepted General Muhammadu Buhari’s offer, (2011) I said what would be my role because I am not prepared to be a spare tyre and he said to me that my role will be as prescribed by the constitution and as many other things as you can be given to do.
“I want to hear it one day from the vice-president that he is not allowed to perform. I don’t like rumour and I don’t like gossip. If he is not allowed to perform, I would wonder what he is still doing there because he is not allowed to perform.
If it is true that the vice president is not being allowed to perform his job, would it be of interest to Bakare to fill Osinbajo’s job preparatory to his own presidential pursuit?
Or does Bakare see Osinbajo is his biggest threat to 2023?
