How Chelsea Tamed Spurs At The London Derby
By Ekene Dike
Thomas Tuchel faced the biggest test of his Chelsea managerial career when he traveled across London to battle against Jose Mourinho’s Spurs in the London derby. He scaled through as Chelsea tamed a Spurs side reeling from two consecutive defeats.
Tuchel would eventually register a second win in three games as he edged out Spurs 1-0 on Thursday night.
Spurs’ man of the moment, Heung Min Son powered the first jaw-dropping shot at Edouard Mendy in the 4th minute. Mendy did well to push it away. Chelsea showed that they were ready to wreak havoc by applying pressure into the Spurs area and that duress would eventually pay off when Eric Dier nibbled Timo Werner from behind in the 22nd minute in the box.
Thereafter, Jorginho dispatched the spot kick thunderously to give Chelsea a dream start in the 23rd minute. Spurs were looking to find an equalizer but Serge Aurier’s header from a Son free kick went wide on the stroke of half time. At the break, Chelsea were ahead, thanks to Jorginho’s well taken penalty goal.
In the second half, Spurs did a good job by forcing Chelsea to take shots from outside the box as Calum Hudson-Odoi let fly, however, it didn’t trouble Hugo Lloris in goal.
A flustered Jose Mourinho brought on 2019 Uefa Champions League semi final hero, Lucas Moura and Eric Lamela in a bid to salvage a point as the game became intenser. Mason Mount would hit a shot which was parried away by Lloris from inside the 18 area, before Eric Lamela would force out a remarkable save from Mendy in the closing periods of the tussle. Spurs would have a last roll of the dice four minutes from time. But it wasn’t their day in front of goal.
As Chelsea tamed Spurs, Jose Mourinho was sell shocked as he lost a second consecutive home game for the first time in 21 years of his managerial career. Tottenham have now suffered three successive Premier League defeats for the first time since November 2012 under André Villas-Boas.
Furthermore, this masterclass pulled off by Thomas Tuchel saw him become the first Chelsea manager to keep clean sheets in each of his first three games as Chelsea manager since Jose Mourinho in 2004. His Blues have now climbed up to sixth position on the Premier League table.
