Why David Mark’s Daughter, Rep Onuh Joined APC

Rep. Blessing Onuh, representing Otukpo/Ohimini Federal Constituency of Benue has defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC from the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA. Rep Onuh is also a daughter to erstwhile president of the Senate, Senator David Mark who is one of the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Ms Onuh according to reliable sources is part of the inner caucus in the House of Representatives that threw up Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker and her defection was reportedly made to concretise her influence within the camp.

“You know she is part of the Gbajabiamila tendency in the House of Representatives and other members of the bloc have been telling her that she cannot stand in APGA and be hoping to influence decisions in the APC controlled house.

“So, her defection is largely on account of political exigency within the House of Representatives. Besides, you also know that the future of APGA is largely uncertain,” it was further gathered.

Ms. Onuh had initially sought to represent her constituency on the platform of the PDP but was outmaneuvered by a plot within the PDP and she moved over to APGA where she brought the party from nothing to win the seat that had for long been occupied by the PDP.

She had towards the end of last year defected to the APC in Otukpo and made it formal on the floor on Tuesday.

Besides her, another member, Yakubu Abdullahi, representing Bauchi Federal Constituency, also dumped the People’s Redemption Party, PRP for the APC.

Like Rep Onuh, Abdullahi made his declaration vide a letter read on the floor of the House on Tuesday morning.

Though the two defections were not from the main opposition PDP, the development may have also strengthened the APC and weakened the strength of the opposition as a bloc.

Onuh blamed her defection from APGA to what she described as intractable crisis at all levels of the party even as she said her decision was taken in consultation with her people.

She did not make mention of her father though who she represents. Senator Mark has been regarded as one of the ‘principalities’ in the PDP and her

due to leadership crisis at all levels of the party, adding she decided to leave after serious consultation with her people.

Abdullahi on his part said he decided to leave the PRP after two persons emerged as national chairmen of the party.
