It is emerging that the number of girls kidnapped from the Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State may be up to 550. The new figure for the Zamfara School kidnap follows a roll count of those who were left behind according to reporters on ground.

The figure is way above the 300 first reported by GreenWhiteGreen GWG and several other credible news organisations.

Daily Trust reported that the school which has an enrolment of 600 was only able to account for 50 students who escaped after the bandits came and shepherded the others away in vehicles and some by feet.

If confirmed, this Zamfara school kidnap, it would be the highest number of students abducted in the growing spate of school kidnappings in the country.

It was gathered that the parents of those left behind besieged the school early on Friday morning to take their wards away. The parents were initially resisted by the authorities but succumbed after much pressure from the agonized parents, mostly ladies.

Many of those whose wards were taken away according to the news report slumped after finding that their wards had been taken away by the bandits.

“Initially, the school authorities prevented them from going with the remaining students but they grew angrier and began to pull down doors and windows of the buildings in the school and the school authority had to yield to their demands,” a teacher in the school told Daily Trust.

“When the gunmen laid siege, they attacked the soldiers stationed in the community before they gained entry into the school.

“Some people told us that they stationed vehicles at the outskirts of the school.

“Security operatives and the local vigilante groups are trailing the gunmen and dozens of other residents have volunteered to take part in the search,” he said

Speaking with Daily Trust, the state’s commissioner of information, Alhaji Sulaiman Tunau Anka, however, said the exact number of abducted students in the Zamfara school kidnap is yet to be ascertained.

“We are yet to verify the exact number of students kidnapped.

“Security operatives have launched a manhunt for the criminals.”

“They went to the school with vehicles. Some of the girls were made to trek. We are on top of the situations as all contacts and efforts are being made to rescue the kidnapped schoolgirls,” he said.
