How Arsenal Overcame Leicester City From Behind
By Ekene Dike
A superb come-from-behind win by Arsenal saw the Gunners stun Leicester at the King Power Stadium as the visitors turned around a sixth-minute deficit to pluck a 3-1 victory.
It was a victory that ensured that Mikel Arteta’s side leapfrogged Tottenham to 9th place on the table for the time being.
Leicester City got off to a dream start when Youri Tielemans sprinted with the ball into the box in the sixth minute, struck the ball low and hard to beat Bernd Leno between the sticks for Arsenal.
Not long after, Harvey Barnes attempted to beat Leno from outside the area. Equal to the task, Leno was able to make a save this time.
Willian who was restored to the starting line-up went in quest of a leveller through a decent strike which went agonizingly wide in the 27th minute. The Gunners began to grow in confidence as Nicolas Pepe worked wonders from the left flank.
Then Arsenal got a well-deserved equalizer in the 40th minute when David Luiz nodded home from an accurate service by his fellow Brazilian teammate, Willian. Luiz had floated a free kick outside the box into space within the Leicester penalty box for his former Chelsea colleague to nod home.
The turnaround was complete just before the interval as Wilfred Ndidi’s intention to block Nicolas Pepe’s strike hit his arm in the eighteen-yard box. Alexandre Lacazette stood up and tucked it away in confident fashion to give Arsenal the lead going into the break.
Seven minutes after the restart, Pepe finished off a great team effort to increase the Arsenal advantage over Leicester City to two. Willian was credited with another assist in the contest.
Leicester’s bad day became worse as one of their dangerous weapons in the figure of Harvey Barnes picked up an injury. That was detrimental to the team’s chances of getting back into the game. Subsequently, the Foxes struggled to create chances.
A brilliant 81st minute volley flashed the face of the goal, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s curled effort beat Peter Schmeichel but couldn’t go into the net.
A long seven minutes were added to the game, due to the amount of time wasted on treatments of injured players. Kelechi Iheanacho had the chance to give Leicester a second goal, however, he missed from close range in the dying minutes of extra time as Arsenal romped to victory.
