How I Escaped Zamfara School Kidnap – Student
A Junior Secondary School student of Government Secondary School, Jangebe in Talata Mafara, in Zamfara State has revealed how she escaped the kidnap bid of the bandits who invaded her school last Friday.
Maryam Sani, who narrated her escapade to The Cable said she was able to escape by hiding herself with four other girls in a room despite the threats of the bandits to kill anyone who ran away.
Speaking through a translator, she said:
“She said when these kidnappers arrived, she just started shouting and ran away from her hostel,” the translator said.
“After she ran, the bandits went to another room while she and her other colleagues hid in a single room. When she got to the room, she knocked on the door and they asked ‘who are you?’ and she said ‘I’m the one, Maryam’. And they said ‘are you sure you’re Maryam?’ and she said ‘yes’. And they opened the door and she entered. They were five in number in that single room and they hid.
Further explaining how she escaped the Zamfara school kidnap, the JSS 3 student said:
“According to what she said, the bandits were shouting that they were going to kill whoever runs away. During the operation, another member called them on their phone. The person said, ‘have you started the work?’ and someone said ‘yes let me show you’. So they took their phone and started filming.
“She escaped because she met her colleagues in that small room. The bandits didn’t see that small room.”
The abduction of the Zamfara school girls came eight days after 27 boys of Government Science Secondary School, Kagara, Niger State were also taken away by bandits operating from the bush.
Those boys alongside 11 others including staff and family members in the school were only released on Saturday.
The kidnap of the Zamfara girls is about the boldest kidnap of students in the nation’s history more than the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok kidnap of 2014.
