I Refused To Peel Egusi For Kalu’s Mother – Abaribe
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has said that submission to Senator Orji Kalu’s mother was the root of the crisis that overwhelmed his relationship with Kalu while they were respectively deputy governor and governor of Abia State between 1999 and 2003 when he resigned.
Abaribe who was Deputy-Governor to Kalu in his soon to be launched book entitled, “Made in Aba”, said President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senate President, Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, intervened separately, but couldn’t resolve the misunderstanding.
The book also narrated how he survived three impeachment attempts as Deputy Governor of Abia State during the administration of Kalu.
According to Abaribe, the problem started when he failed to join the league of “Egusi” peelers that thronged Kalu’s mother abode “for whatever reason”.
He said: “I lasted exactly three years and nine months in office, before I threw in the towel. The bumpy ride ended on 7th March, 2003, when I finally resigned and switched parties.
“The one tenure was characterised by three attempts at impeachment. The one thread that runs through them all is that government can make no error.
“Once the idea stuck in the head of the chief executive, person around him would leave no stone unturned to actualise the desired end.
“The first attempt at impeaching me died on the floor of the House of Assembly, roundly defeated for the baseless shenanigan that it was,” Abaribe said as the relationship worsened beyond issues with Kalu’s mother.
“The second attempt I survived by a hair’s breadth: by just one vote differential. The third, I did not bother to respond to.”
Kalu and Abaribe are members of the 9th Senate and have seen their relationship turn around from vicious political combat to tolerant and respect for one another.
Orji is the Senate Chief Whip making him the number four man in the ranks of the All Progressives Congress, APC Senate Caucus while Abaribe is the Senate Minority Leader, the leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
