Gov Matawalle Explains Mystery Of ’38 Missing Girls’
Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State on Tuesday explained the mystery of the 38 missing girls who were mentioned in news reports as unaccounted for following the return of 279 girls of Government Science Secondary School, Jangebe, Zamfara State. The girls were returned early on Tuesday morning after four days in the hands from the den of bandits.
Following the abduction multiple sources including government officials had pointed out that 317 girls were abducted by the bandits.
However, when the girls were returned on Tuesday morning, only 317 girls were counted leading to the mystery of 38 missing Zamfara girls who were said to be unaccounted for.
It immediately fed conspiracy theories and revived talks about Leah Sharibu, the only girl who was not returned when Boko Haram bandits invaded a girls secondary school in Dapchi, Yobe State.
Following negotiations with the bandits all the girls were returned apart from Sharibu who the bandits said they held back because she refused to renounce her Christian faith.
Governor Matawalle, however, cleared the air on the missing 38 girls on Tuesday when he said that 279 girls were kidnapped and that all 279 girls were returned.
The governor who spoke to newsmen on his experience during the four days the girls were in the custody of the bandits said that he was shocked to have realized that some people offered money to the bandits not to release the girls.
He said that he had passed on that information to security men to discretely investigate the issue.
On his experience while the girls were in the hands of the bandits, he said:
“I didn’t sleep for four days. We worked hard for days to ensure the safe return of the girls to their families. We are using kinetic and non-kinetic approaches, and the non-kinetic is working for us. If not, we wouldn’t have successfully negotiated the release of these girls, ” he said.
