Bashir El-Rufai, the son of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, has voiced his opposition to government subsidies for religious pilgrimages, asserting that it should not be a priority for any administration, particularly in light of Nigeria’s current economic challenges.

GWG.ng reports that the statement from El-Rufai comes amidst calls from civil society groups urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the preparations for the 2024 Hajj by subsidizing the fare for pilgrims. Expressing his views on the matter via his X handle, El-Rufai emphasized the inappropriateness of government involvement in subsidizing religious pilgrimages, especially considering the prevailing economic climate.

See The Price Of Canadian Dollar To Naira Black Market

Published

By

The Canadian Dollar (CAD) in the foreign exchange market is experiencing significant trading activity. As of today, the ‘Aboki’ rate, a term referring to the informal currency exchange rate offered by street traders, stands at N1,177.967 to one Canadian Dollar.

The black market, operating parallel to the official financial system, reflects the unregulated nature of currency trading in parts of Nigeria.

This market is largely driven by the supply and demand dynamics of foreign currency, often resulting in rates that diverge from those officially recognized by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The allure of potentially better rates in the black market is tempered by the risks associated with its unregulated environment.

Instances of fraud and scams are higher in these markets, prompting caution among individuals and businesses looking to exchange large sums of money.

Despite these risks, the black market remains a significant player in Nigeria’s foreign exchange landscape, often providing liquidity where the formal banking sector falls short.

However, the lack of regulatory oversight leads to price discrepancies, with the Aboki rate for the Canadian Dollar consistently higher than the CBN’s official rate.

The disparity between the official and black market rates can have broad economic implications, affecting everything from individual remittances to large-scale business transactions.

CBN Plans To Sack 12 More Directors

The current rate of N1,177.967 for one Canadian Dollar in the parallel market illustrates the premium paid for currencies outside the official channels.

The black market rate signifies a substantial cost variance for transactions such as remittances from the Nigerian diaspora in Canada or trade payments to Canadian entities.

For example, 100 Canadian Dollars are exchanged for N117,796.70, while 1,000 Canadian Dollars reach the hefty sum of N1,177,967.00 in the parallel market.

Ayotunde’s counsel, Adesina Ogunlana, disclosed to SaharaReporters on Monday that his client had been charged and taken to court earlier in the day.

Ogunlana said, “Ayotunde Richards will be brought back to the court before Justice Allagoa on Wednesday for his bail application.

“Also today, he was at the Lagos High Court, Ikeja for his own case before Justice D.T. Olatokun. That was for his fundamental human rights application and that was adjourned to April 29, 2024.

The Nigeria Police Force lodged charges against Ayotunde Richards after Davidson Adejuwon, who was said to be an aide to Daniel Olukoya from MFM church, submitted a petition.

According to the petition, Ayotunde and several others were accused of engaging in cyberbullying and spreading defamatory allegations about Olukoya.

Ayotunde also filed a suit against the church’s General Overseer, Pastor Olukoya, over an alleged breach of his fundamental human rights.

CBN Plans To Sack 12 Directors After Already Firing 7

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is reportedly preparing to dismiss twelve directors in the coming days, following the termination of the employment of seven directors last Friday.

Among the terminated directors, two have come to terms with their dismissal, whereas the other five intend to challenge the bank’s decision in court, alleging their removal was wrongful.

The two directors, who opted not to contest their termination, are currently under scrutiny by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for their alleged involvement in the Obaze report.

The five directors contesting their termination are reportedly unhappy as they have not been associated with any misconduct or wrongdoing.

In their termination letters, the seven directors were informed that their dismissal was due to the bank’s new strategic direction, which necessitated “reorganizational and human capital restructuring.”

The letters stated that their services would no longer be required with effect from Friday, 15th March 2024, and they were instructed to hand over all bank properties in their possession to their department’s administrator immediately.

According to the Nation, it has been disclosed that the remaining twelve directors who have yet to receive their termination letters have knowledge of their impending dismissal.

A source within the CBN expressed concern over the lack of an exit package for the terminated directors, particularly given their lengthy tenure and the absence of any charges or allegations against them.

Additionally, the source emphasized the significant loss of 200 years of institutional knowledge and expertise that would accompany the termination of these seasoned directors.

Certain employees have made appeals to the management on behalf of the directors facing termination, asking for the decision to be rethought and converted to retirement to ensure the directors can access their allowances.

Activities at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife in Osun, and Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), were on Monday paralysed as workers complied with the directive to embark on seven-day warning strike.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the seven-day nationwide warning strike was declared by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).

The institutions’ branches of SSANU and NASU in compliance with directive of its national bodies locked the main gates preventing entry and exit of vehicles on the campuses.

The bodies had declared a nationwide warning strike to protest the Federal Government’s failure to pay arrears of four month salaries owed member of the unions in 2022 Correspondents of NAN, who monitored the strike in Ile-Ife and Akure, report that lecture halls and offices were also locked hindering academic activities by lecturers who earlier had been paid their arrears.

In separate interviews, the Chairmen of SSANU in the institutions, Messrs Taiwo Arobadi and Felix Adubi, respectively, said that the unions action was in compliance with the directive of its national bodies.

The chairmen said that all their members in registry, bursary, works, maintenance, security and student affairs have withdrawn their services.
According to the chairmen, the Federal Government had signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in 2009, and Memoranda of Agreement (MoA) in 2023 respectively over payment of their arrears, but nothing was done till date.

Arobadi said that if the FG does the needful today, the strike would be called-off, but failure to do so within stipulated time, next action would be decided.
“What we are agitating for is that Federal Government should pay our four months withheld salaries of members, following the 2022, nationwide strike.
“We see no reason why government should pay only Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and abandon SSANU, NASU and NAAT,” he stated.
Also, Comrade Wole Odewumi, the Chairman, Non-Teaching Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, OAU branch, told NAN that the workers complied with the national directive on the strike.

Odewumi said “no ounion is superior to another, and since the Federal Government has paid ASSU, other unions should be paid as well.”
Also, Adubi, said that the unions in FUTA don’t have any grouse with the institution’s management, but the federal government.

He said that the unions in FUTA would not heed any appeal from the school management not to join the seven-day warning strike declared by its national leadership.

“ All administrative and technical activities in FUTA have been paralyzed and we still have the whole of this week to comply with the warning strike.

“ We don’t have problem with management of FUTA, but the Federal Government and no appeal from the school will go anywhere.

“ As a matter of fact, it is unfair treatment to our members and this strike is to resolve the issue positively before it leads to unnecessary upheaval in our universities.

“ The Federal Government should pay our withheld four months’ salaries in the federal universities and inter-university centres as done for our academic counterparts,” he stated.

NAN reports that the institution was deserted and no academic activity was ongoing in compliance with the unions’ instruction. (NAN)
