Peter Obi raised the issue of the undervaluation of Nigerian academics on Wednesday when he said that political thugs earn more than professors. His assertion has raised serious debate on social media.

According to him, political thugs in Nigeria earn more than academics. He spoke at the presentation of a book written by Prof Chinyere Okunna of the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.

Okunna, remarkably served in his administration as governor of Anambra State.

He said, “Prof. Okunna (the author), who we are celebrating today; I can tell you earns less than a political thug. Nigeria prefers paying bandits and dialoguing with them than paying or meeting with resourceful and hard-working intellectuals.”

“I never knew Okunna before I appointed her commissioner when I was governor, but I became interested in her when I saw her CV as a nominee.”

“Many people protested her appointment because she was not a member of our political party but I remained resolute to appoint her because I needed the right team to do the job.”

Obi’s assertion of political thugs earning more than professors according to some rings true even starting from his own state, Anambra.

It would be recalled that a once foremost political thug was widely alleged to have foisted a governor on Anambra State and even prevented Obi from becoming governor of the state until the supposed political thug fell out with the governor.

In Edo State, recently a political thug was reported to have celebrated his acquisition of a billion naira. He was alleged to have thrown a party to celebrate his joining of the political class.

That alleged thug was also known to have vowed to remove Governor Godwin Obaseki during the last governorship election and mocked him and his wife for being childless in a video that went viral.

In Lagos a celebrated political thug belonging to the APC is also known to control the commercial drivers in Lagos. His income is assessed by his ostentatious lifestyle and has his children schooling abroad. One of the leading and beautiful society ladies in Lagos has recently been in the news celebrating her love for him.

That political thugs earn more than professors may have been accentuated with the claim that the celebrated leader in Lagos recently paid some intellectuals to ghostwrite a book for him.

In Oyo State, political thugs until the advent of the Seyi Makinde administration were celebrated and flaunted their wealth all about.

In Zamfara, Katsina and some other Northern States, the thugs there are in another category and are better described as bandits who have carved territories for themselves in the forests.

However, Abuja presents a different scenario. Those who act as political thugs are not as remunerated as their colleagues in the states and as such are used by different political pressure groups to stage demonstrations in support of popular or unpopular causes.

The big time earners are those who collect the mobilisaton money and go to Berger or other rural areas around the city to mobilise people to demonstrate for tokens.
