United Silenced noisy city neighbours

Manchester United temporarily silenced their noisy neighbours on Sunday as Manchester City suffered their first defeat in 28 games.

United painted the city of Manchester red in the local derby at Etihad stadium, courtesy of goals by Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw.

Bruno Fernandes gave United the lead on City territory from the penalty spot. In less than 120 seconds, Gabriel Jesus nibbled Anthony Martial from behind in the box. Bruno Fernandes converted the spot kick in confident fashion.

Thereafter, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s troops shut out the attacks from their opponents, forcing City to shoot from outside the box. Ikay Gundogan who has been one of Pep Guardiola’s brightest stars of the season, shot at goal three times. But that goal didn’t come.

Marcus Rashford also forced Ederson in goal for City to make a save in the 15th minute.

City’s skipper Kevin De Bruyne who was far from his best played a free kick over the bar in the closing moments of the first half. Another City star, Riyad Mahrez was left jaded when his strike flashed across the face of the goal on the stroke of half time.

Two minutes after the restart, Rodri’s side footed attempt was kept out by the woodwork.

Nonetheless, Luke Shaw in the 50th minute, gave Manchester United a two-goal cushion over City putting the noisy neighbours to silence.

The left back received a throw from his goalkeeper, dribbled past a marauding Joao Cancelo, advanced with the ball to the City penalty area and passed to Marcus Rashford who returned the ball back to him, immediately he got the ball from Rashford, he played a low and hard rocket of a shot which went into the net, much to the fascination of Ederson who couldn’t do anything about it.

Almost immediately, Raheem Sterling who hasn’t scored against Manchester United in his career fell short in his quest to pull one back for the hosts. Riyad Mahrez was disappointed once again as his volley was skied before Anthony Martial spurned a chance to make the scoreline look more humiliating after missing a 69th minute one on one chance.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer became the first Manchester United manager in history to win in his first three away visits in the Manchester  derby.
