Malami Explains Why Delta Can’t Get Ibori Loot

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister for Justice Abubakar Malami has explained why the £4.2 million loot recovered from associates of former Delta State governor, James Ibori would not be returned to the state.

 GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported that under the agreement between the Federal Government and the United Kingdom that the returned loot estimated at N2.2 billion would be used for federal projects none of which is in Delta State.

Malami had said that the loot would be used for the completion of ongoing work on the 2nd Niger Bridge, Abuja to Kano and Lagos Ibadan expressways.

Justifying his action, Malami while speaking on Channels TV on Tuesday said, “The major consideration relating to who is entitled to a fraction or perhaps the money in its entirety is a function of law and international diplomacy.”

Noting that the laws breached by Ibori and his associates were federal laws and that the Delta State Government was not involved in the efforts to retrieve the funds, he said:

“All the processes associated with the recovery were consummated by the federal government and the federal government is, indeed, the victim of the crime and not sub-national,” Malami said in explaining why Delta cannot get Ibori loot.

The Delta State Commissioner for Information, Ehiedu Aniagwu has meanwhile vowed the determination of the state government to seek redress on the issue.

“We would try to get take advantage of the legal system to make the federal government correct the injustice they are about to visit on us as a state,” he said.

“If they are quite sure that the funds they are about to repatriate left Delta State on account of those who have governed the state in the past, on what basis would they now take the money to another place?”
