Owerri Ablaze, Inmates Freed From Prison, Police
Government officials in Imo State have been told to take shelter after gunmen on Monday morning stormed the Owerri Prison and the Police headquarters freeing all inmates from the two facilities.
The situation was as yet hazy on Monday morning but there was tension everywhere around Imo State and there are reports that as many as 1,500 inmates may have been freed from the Owerri Prison.
One report said that the same set of gun men subsequently invaded the police headquarters and freed all the people held in custody at the police headquarters which is not far from the Government House, the operational base of Governor Hope Uzodinma.
Pictures of the inferno from the invasion have been put on social media.
A spokesman for the correctional headquarters in Abuja did not immediately return a request seeking comments, PeoplesGazette reported.
One source said that all the vehicles found in the Imo State Police command headquarters were razed to the ground by the yet to be identified gunmen who operated almost freely from about shortly after midnight to 3.00 a.m. on Monday morning.
The gunmen were reported to have after breaking into the Owerri Prison asked the inmates to go home and that they had no reason to be there.
The development in Owerri is coming against the background of security concerns across the country with bandits ravaging the North and kidnappers almost taking the reins everywhere else.
President Muhammadu Buhari meanwhile is out of the country on a medical vacation.
