Thousands of prisoners freed by hoodlums from the Owerri Prison in the early morning attack on Monday morning attack have abandoned their possessions on the streets of the city to make good their escape.

The development came as the Owerri Correctional Facility confirmed the attack which happened in the wee hours of Monday.

Vanguard reported that the bags and other possessions including male and female clothes were abandoned along Okigwe road just in front of the Correctional Centre.

The abandoned possessions were also sighted at Wethedral, Assumpta and in front of Imo Government House. Some eyewitnesses who spoke to Vanguard said that, “The inmates decided to abandon their properties because they think with the bag they can be located easily and some of the bags were heavy for them to carry them and run at the same time.”

The Imo command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has confirmed an attack on its facility in Owerri in the early hours of Monday, April 5, 2021.

 GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported earlier on the attack on the facility and on the police headquarters leading to the escape of thousands of prisoners from the Owerri correctional facility and the police headquarters.

Public Relations Officer of the service in Imo, Mr James Madugba, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Owerri on Monday.

Madugba who said that the event occurred at about 2.00 a.m Monday also said that many inmates escaped with some operational vehicles razed.

He added that the services had yet to confirm the numbers of escaped prisoners who and damaged vehicles at the Owerri facility.

“We can confirm that the facility was attacked at about 2.00 a.m. Monday with operational vehicles burnt and many inmates at large.

“We have yet to confirm definite figures but we’ll make them public as soon as possible “, he said.

He, however, called on residents of the state to go about their lawful businesses, as according to him, the situation is under control.
