Anxiety As Herdsmen Sack, Kill In Ebonyi Community

Ngbo community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State was on Monday morning sacked by rampaging herdsmen with many killed and others scampering for safety.

A Vanguard report claimed that besides the lives lost, the rampaging herdsmen also burnt down many houses of the villagers.

No reason was given in the report as having triggered the invasion of the community.

The development follows Sunday’s resolution by Southeast governors to set up a security network to check insecurity in the region.

Besides the decision to set up the Ebube Agu, the governors also affirmed a ban to open grazing of cattle in the region.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that open grazing has been a source of conflict between mostly Fulani herdsmen and villagers following reports of the disruption of farming in community lands in Ebonyi State by cattle herded by the herdsmen.

Vanguard reported that the Ebonyi State Government had, last Wednesday, put modalities in place for the setting up of 1,000 vigilante groups across the state.

The latest attack, which has been described as unprecedented, affected Ebele village in Umuogodoakpa Community and some of the victims according to the report have sought shelter in safe locations.

It was also recalled the that herdsmen had attacked four communities in Ishielu Local Government Area where over 25 innocent rural dwellers were massacred in cold blood. The development in the lastest Ebonyi community to be affected by the violence is bound to be unnerving for all stakeholders.

“As at the time of filing this report, no suspect has been arrested or paraded by the Ebonyi State Police Command in connection with the killing,” Vanguard reported.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the latest development is sure to put Governor Dave Umahi at his wits end given his membership of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, APC which is in control of the security services and which has not been able to put a stop to the killing of his people.
