APC, PDP Get Date For Lagos LGA Poll

The Lagos State government says it plans to hold its local government councils (LGA) poll in July, in a contest that is set to bring the two dominant political parties in the state, APC and PDP in another faceoff.

Retired Justice Ayotunde Phillips, Chairman of Lagos State Independence Electoral Commission (LASIEC) said this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

Phillips said the LGA poll into the offices of Chairman, Vice Chairman and Councillors in all the 20 local councils and 37 LCDAs in Lagos State state would hold that day.

“The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) the body charged with the statutory responsibility of electoral management and administration is committed to conducting a free, fair, credible and inclusive election.

“The Statutory Notice shall be published very soon,” the LASIEC chairman said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tenure of the incumbents, who have been in power since 2017, will expire in July.

The state Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) had advised Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to set machinery in motion for the conduct of the LGA polls in Lagos.

The state IPAC Chairman, Mr James Adeshina spoke against the backdrop of insinuations that Lagos State would not conduct LGA poll in 2021 since there was no provision for such exercise in 2021 budget of the state.

He said that IPAC members would not support appointment of sole administrators or caretaker committees when the tenure of the incumbents expired, NAN reported.

APC, PDP To Clash in Lagos LGA Poll

The PDP which had in the past put up strong challenges to political parties led by the APC national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu had, however, not really been victorious.

The PDP had in the past alleged been rigged out in some of the last local government elections and its efforts in seeking redress in the courts have, however, never really been successful.
