Political intrigues and personality clash were rife on Thursday as President Muhammadu Buhari approved the suspension of Ms. Hadiza Bala Usman as managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA.

Ms Usman has held the position since 2015 following her stint working as a secretary in the Presidential Campaign Committee that ushered Buhari’s victory in the 2015 election. Before her appointment at the NPA, the Katsina State born indigene had worked as Chief of Staff in Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State.

Her suspension according to some sources follows a disruption in the political alliance between her political benefactor, El-Rufai and the minister of transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.

Amaechi according to a statement issued by the presidency requested for an investigation into the affairs of the agency following alleged preliminary investigations. NPA is supervised by Amaechi’s Ministry of Transportation.

The details of the alleged infractions against Ms. Usman have, however, remained undisclosed.

Following her first appointment in 2015, she was reappointed for a second term in 2020.

Following her suspension, President Buhari appointed Kebbi State born executive director of finance and administration, Mohammed Bello-Koko was named in the presidency statement to act for her in the interim.

According to some sources the president gave the order for her suspension on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 but allies of the suspended managing director tried to reverse the order but were apparently unsuccessful leading to the formal announcement by the presidency on Thursday night.

Ms. Hadiza Usman was one of the main voices of the Bring Back Our Girls, BBOG group who campaigned for the return of the kidnapped girls of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State prior to the advent of the Buhari administration.

She is also the daughter of one of the North’s most venerated intellectuals, the late Dr. Yusufu Bala Usman.
