Chelsea earned an emphatic 2-1 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad stadium, preventing and postponing the Pep Guardiola tutored home team from taking the premiership title victory lap at their expense.

From the early exchanges, it was an exhilarating encounter with both sides shutting each other out until Raheem Sterling opened the scoring one minute before the half time break. The goal came after Andreas Christiansen slipped in intercepting a cross to Gabriel Jesus’. It was a costly error as Christiansen was shipped out of the game but not before he set a low cross to Sergio Aguero which was bounced upon by Sterling.

The English international slotted it home beyond the reach of Edouard Mendy as City were in touching distance of this season’s Premier League title.

But there was drama right on the stroke of half time as Sergio Aguero missed a penalty which was caught with one hand by Mendy.

Coming out of the tunnel for the second half, Thomas Tuchel’s inspirational words to his players proved effective as Hakim Ziyech levelled matters in the 63rd minute.

After the equalizer, Chelsea looked like the side that would win the game and that was portrayed when two of their goals were correctly disallowed by VAR.

Pep Guardiola felt hard done by when Raheem Sterling was denied a penalty in the closing stages when Zouma bumped into the England attacker.

Chelsea finished the game when Marcos Alonso instinctively slotted home from inside the box to give the Blues a well deserved win.

The victory pushed Chelsea to the third position on the table and will extend Manchester City’s wait to be crowned as English champions.

It creates suspense ahead of the Champions League final and hand Thomas Tuchel a second win of the season against Pep Guardiola.

Speaking after the game, Tuchel while admitting that the victory gives Chelsea confidence into the Champions League final, however, admitted that it would be a different kettle of fish.

According to him the UCL final is a unique game but admitted that Chelsea now have the confidence that they know how to win Manchester City.

Also speaking after the game, Guardiola after his second defeat in the hands of Chelsea in as many games said they missed their chances and played down the mutters about the penalty miss by Aguero.

He also played down the uproar about the penalty decision denied City in the last minutes when Zouma bumped into Sterling.
